Has anyone tried removing the scoop (bulge?) from the hood? I don't know about earlier models, but my 2021 came with a fake hood scoop that looks like an afterthought added to the hood - and which is completely useless. Strikes me as a tough guy having to walk around assuring everyone that he's actually tough. Looks stupid. Has anyone removed theirs or have recommendations on its removal?

Second question: Is anyone aware of locking hubs for the 2.5 Gen, or have any experience in ordering custom ones?

I wouldn’t recommend removing your hood scoop. It will leave behind holes in your hood. Being as your a lunar rock tundra you won’t find anyone without a hood scoop to trade you as this color was only available with hood scoop. Best bet if you really don’t like the scoop is to buy a different stock hood and have it painted.

as for the locking hubs I personally haven’t seen it but I don’t think many newer trucks if any lock at the hub any longer, look into differential locks if your looking for more traction

I anticipated this eventuality. My plan is to seal the holes with epoxy, and then afterward cover the area with a vinyl black hood decal, rather like this one. Do you have experience with pulling the scoop off?

    Thank you!

    Which part? lol

I don't really understand what Toyota was thinking, dude. Like, with the TRD Sport on the Tacoma, they at least integrated the hood scoop with the hood itself - even if it wasn't real. My Tundra's scoop looks like someone's afterthought.

If it actually cooled the engine, I would have nothing to say. But "looking cool" means nothing. I want the real deal, otherwise it's just a piece of plastic creating more drag and blocking my view.

Does anyone have experience removing the scoop?

There’s a big hole underneath it. You’ll need a new hood.
ETA; Actually a bunch of holes of varying sizes. I was picturing the Tacoma that has a rectangular hole under the also non-functional scoop. Also, if you’re ever coming through Denver I’ve got an unpainted, scoopless hood and I happen to “know a guy” who paints cars. He’s pretty good.

Perfect - this is exactly the sort of information I am looking for. Thank you!

So the scoop does actually cool the engine? Do you by chance have photos or can direct me to photos of what it looks like underneath? I was planning to pull it apart this weekend, but would rather not waste my time.

If you're truck were any color other than Lunar Rock I would suggest a hood swap, as there are lots of people looking to add the scoop. Trouble is, the Lunar Rock for the current gen only came on the Pro, and those all have the scoop.

No, the scoop is not functional. There are several small holes for it's attachment.

If they are small, then they can probably be filled with epoxy - at least, I think. Do you happen to have photos of what it looks like underneath? I feel like I have searched for weeks now without finding anything. My plan is to remove the hood scoop and toss it, not replace it.

The scoop is fake, it doesn't cool the engine. There are a lot of holes under that scoop. Very easy to unbolt. Easier to swap hoods then fill in the holes.

Like Jim said above, you'll have an easier time just replacing the hood after a body shop repaint. The only obstacle here would be the price of it. If you plan to keep the truck forever, then you don't have to have any concerns for others ideas on it. If you might ever trade or sell the truck, you'll take a hit for not having the OEM Pro hood for the truck.

    Excellent - thank you!

I think I'm up for it. I'll post results and gladly eat my hat and the scoop if I can't pull it off.

    Thank you!

Fair enough. Still, I took the TRD Off-Road decal off my Tacoma and still got $10k over what I paid for it when I swapped out for the Tundra. At the end of the day, if I decide to swap, the dealer can add the scoop - I'm making this truck mine. Above all, this truck must be functional and reliable.

As you should! I as long as you're making an informed decision it's all good. You should document it and do a write up so that if others with the Lunar Rock trucks want to do something similar they have a guide. I'll just be

I bet a decide amount of guys would be willing to straight up trade and deal with the paint job on their own.

I actually would like to convert to manual hubs as well. I could then install a solid intermediate shaft and do away with the weak stub shaft, the ADD actuator, and the slide collar. The passenger side CV axle would rotate in reverse while in 2wd but with a manual hub it would be fine to spin that way. But to answer your question - no, it's a mystical creature, they do not exist :(

That is correct, though should I be posting my location any time I post...?

I will write up what I find and how my experience goes removing the hood scoop and covering it over.

Treat that hood scoop like a sore dick and a rattlesnake, and don't "F" with it. We all know it's nonfunctional, just ignore it, LMAO.
