For the audio folks out there that know their poop on audio equipment. I need to buy a receiver to hook up some entertainment equipment in the living room. What should I look for in a receiver? What I plan to hook up:
    1. Directtv
    2. Surround Sound
    3. XBox
    4. Apple TV (original version of it - so no WiFi)
    5. DVD Player (do I need now since I could probably use the xbox for this)
So what should I look for in terms of RCA connections, USB, HDMI, etc? Any number of connections? Amps? Ohms? Brands to stay away from? etc.

Just need to look for one that won't break the bank but that it has enough ports to plug stuff in and not lose sound nor video quality.

    Thanks in advance.

Come listen to mine tomorrow to help you decide. On the new house, I will be going wireless. Less crap to do

Whatever you do, find something with BT so witless devices can hook up to it.

Check out your nearest "Listen Up" audiophile store. Got my NAD A/V receiver there a few years back. Can't beat NAD IMHO.

The new NADs are even more loaded. I'm biased. I love NAD. NAD isn't cheap. But build quality is superior. My coworker Bill who recently passed away turned me onto NAD. Prior to that I was strictly Macintosh tube driven. Tube drivers are still the cleanest sound but not too smart. For pure sound that will blow away anything are tube drivers.

They last for years like Tundras. Like Pendleton wool coats. A new NAD T758 V3 is around $1300. ===bragging rights for years...

I'm a specification freak. Comes with my line of work. Metrology. Most important thing to consider besides "features" you need is THD and SNR.....Total Harmonic Distortion & Signal to Noise Ratio. Not watt output. A high end A/V receiver can put out better sound than a cheaper higher watt one. IE......a high end receiver paired with high end speakers can be cranked up to max with no distortion that you'll never hear. I can measure both at my work at the highest accuracy. My distortion Standard is +/- 0.0001 % and SNR, or "noise floor, in the "dirt", from the CW reference" is -160 dBc/Hz with 1 Hertz offset from the carrier level. Basically a "SSB Phase Noise" measurement with a Keysight PNA. Overkill. Not an easy measurement to do without the right test equipment. A good audio analyzer like a HP 8903B will measure down to -90 dB SNR. Any receiver/ audio amp with SNR spec of -90 dB is a very decent piece to own. Crap is -50dB or higher. Higher would be -48 dB for example. Or -30 dB. Walk away from anything like that.
