If you were going to buy a house, but learned that the HOA has written rules that you may not perform repairs on any vehicle in the driveway or garage, would you change your mind on buying the house?

For those of you who don't work on cars, this isnt directed to you.

Buy the house you want. Doubt your neighbors will actually have a problem with that.

If an HOA letter comes... don’t worry they’ll send at least 4 more.

Edit: also... repairs? What repairs? I was admiring my undercarriage.

    Deal breaker.

Most HOA's are a deal breaker for me. I get the pros of one, but I wouldn't buy a house or property to follow a set of rules what I can and cant do.

Definitely a deal breaker for me, just like @jewsNbrews. The other factor to keep in mind is that your HOA dues can go up as others move out and still tell you what you can do.

I'm okay with the dues, the fees are very low and the foreseeable max is still low. I know it would likely take a neighbor complaining to make it a problem, but all it takes is one.

First general violation is a warning, next is $200, each after goes up by $200. At that rate I may as well pay a mechanic if I have one shitty neighbor.

I would love a house out in the farms but those run 1.5 million here, I don't have that much bread.

By the way, aside from my Tundra/GTI/Element, I have 2 old cars I plan on restoring. It isn't a matter of getting away with occasional maintenance, more like maintenance and long term builds. If it was just small stuff I would do it with the door shut and not worry.

I get it. And why I stated I know the pros and most would be deal breakers, not all. But like others have said as well, they are in a HOA and dont have issues like that or rarely regulated. But like you said, just takes on neighbor to ruin it. Personally I like tinkering, so that would be a deal breaker unless the garage is fully insulated and has heat/ac. So long as vehicle isnt running, my door would be down so they couldn't see what I was doing.

No AC in this garage, not even a doorway to the backyard. Has a doorway to the house or the roll up door. I have considered keeping the door shut but for some things it wouldnt be ideal. I think writing it here and getting feedback tells me go with my gut and not mess with an HOA at all.

Yup. Good news is my wife is on board with saying deal breaker. I just felt a little selfish because she likes the house.

Ain't NO way I'd buy into an HOA that's not going to let me do my own work, or pretty much any HOA for that matter.

While I do understand the purpose of protecting property values, etc., and some folks will come on here and tout the benefits and say it's not that bad but, the truth is, all it takes is one A-Hole with nothing better to do to go around and "police" the neighborhood for the good of all and make life miserable for everybody. Been there, done that, never again.

Just this old guys opinion, life's to short for that crap.

Show me a HOA where I can walk out my front door in my underwear, AR in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, pop off a couple of rounds, holler "'Merica!", and then go back in and not go to jail, I might consider it. Otherwise, nope.

Are those fines real? That's the definition of insanity. Buy a nice home on a piece of land in your name that you pay some dick hole to tell you what to do and then fine you for saying screw you dick hole.

The neighborhood I lived in down in South Florida was brutal. You not only had to worry about neighbors bitching, the HOA hired a private company to patrol the neighborhood looking for infractions a few times a day too.

I bought my house not really knowing what an HOA was not I regret it. Only good thing is that almost everyone keep their front yard clean. One thing I hate about my HOA is that they won't let you park your rv in the driveway.

Change it to this: "Show me a HOA where I can walk out my front door buck naked, piss off the porch, AR in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, pop off a couple of rounds, holler "'Merica!" and then go back in and not go to jail, I might consider it. Otherwise, nope."

HOAs suck. Quick story, years ago I bought a HUD house that had been thrashed, garage door busted in, yard a mess, etc. This was back in the day that HUD would give you the cash to fix it up. If you were handy, you could do it for less and pocket some. I fixed up the interior, replaced the garage door, fixed the irrigation, tore up some dead bushes, plated a few flowers, put flower seeds to fill the gaps, and put down new landscape rock.

Sure as shit soon after this eyesore of a house had been all fixed up I got 2 letters from the HOA.
Letter 1. I had bare dirt in my front yard (the small areas between plantings where the seeds had yet to sprout).
Letter 2. I had painted the garage door the wrong shade of white. Not the wrong color, but the damn wrong shade of fucking white.

Wife and I sold and moved soon. Now we have a nice house on a cul de sac where people keep there house nice because they want to. not because some asshat is micromanaging what god damn shade of color they choose. Plus, I can park my travel trailer in front for a few days while prepping for a trip without worrying about getting a nasty letter.

Yes sir. HOA's are what drove me to my current paradise w/o any HOA. We do have a voluntary Civic Organization that I pay dues to. It is all comprised of neighbors and not some management company. I absolutely detest HOA's.
