I have some WKOR sliders on the way and plan to buy a hi-lift jack to carry when I’m out and about. What I’ve read so far indicates bigger is better but I’m having a hard time convincing myself a 48” wouldn’t be sufficient.

Anyone care to share their thoughts or experiences using a hi-lift on a Tundra, what size they went with, and why?

I already have the mount from Rago on order…

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't have one but I think your terrain could play a factor. Seen images where folks had to use the jack but it was below the level of the wheels. If that is a possibility, get all the length you can. Otherwise, I'd agree that the 48" should be enough.

You go offroad and will use the jack in that environment? If so, i would go larger as you could need the extra length if the terrain is very uneven. Downside is the larger would be even heavier and those jacks are really heavy. Those jacks can be used for many things, so dont just think about jacking up the truck to change a tire.

If you dont offroad in heavy uneven terrain, the 48 is plenty and a little lighter, may be cheaper too.

Yes, I get off-road as much as I can - usually 5-6 trips/year. Terrain is usually mild but I’ve gone through a few rock gardens that had me quite nervous for both clearance and tires. I’m signed up for Broken Arrow at Tundras to Sedona in October which should be fun.

Weight and price differences seem relatively minor - about 3-5 lbs and $10-25.

Longer is better if you need to winch with it.

Down here in FL longer is better just in case the mud your temporarily stuck in is deep. You could need that extra bit of height to get something under the wheel that dropped off in a rut

Go big or go home, but I hate hi lifts and think you're better off with literally anything else.

60 without a doubt; there is so much more to consider than just jacking from the slider.

Consider lifting a tire to jack and stack, or jack and cast from the tire.

As others have said, the extra length definitely helps in winching operations.

Then, take a recovery class that focuses on using it

Lots of youtube vids on hi lift methods.
Btw, if you ever need to jack out a post extra length could potentially be helpful.

I looked closely at these before I ordered the sliders. It’s awesome they can be used on about any vehicle and they definitely look better for lifting but I’m loving the winching potential of a hi lift.

Also, the problem I see with this and a lot of the alternatives, where the heck am I going to store it? Seems like it’d be a pain to keep in on/in the truck and secure.

    Agreed.

I have a 60", but it's the last jack I pick to use on a 3 ton vehicle.

I’d take a bottle jack over a high lift any day. Much safer and you can drive off them

A bottle jack can't (easily) be used to lift a tire, or winch with, etc.

The hi-lift isn't inherently dangerous, but it is very frequently used incorrectly or by those who don't have the training to use it.

Here's where mine is mounted (I take the foot off so it doesn't rattle while driving)

Truth is it is best to have a selection of jacks, all have their purposes. I carry a hi lift, 12 ton bottle, and stock. Plus a few wood blocks.

    Mods, what mods?
I was in the same boat (no pun intended), but went with the 60" jack. Better to have the extra height than be short. I also picked up a base plate (https://www.amazon.com/Seven-Sparta-Compatible-Accessories-Protector/dp/B08CZQHHZD) to use in case someone gets stuck in soft sand/mud.

Ended up picking up a 60” with the base plate and winch kit. Already replaced the shackles that come with the winch kit and am currently shopping for some grade 80 chain and hooks… holy hell chain is expensive… 20’ will cost more than the hi-lift! Thanks for everyone’s input. Sliders should be here in 3 weeks!

Might check some pawn shops or junk dealers for chains. If you have a Fleet Pride shop around they also have reasonable prices.

Instead of 20' of chain, why not look into a 20' winch extension, or just a static strap?

Absolutely, chains are outdated for the most part in an off road vehicle anymore. Straps have come a long, long way.

Chains and straps both have their place. I carry one chain and three straps. In mud chain is nice and ez to wash up. Sharp rocks, chain doesn't get cut up. Dragging fallen trees, chain doesn't tear. Lots of reasons to have a chain handy.

I do have 20’ and 30’ static straps - the way I learned to winch with hi-lift is using at least some chain and hooks. Plan is a 8’ section to run the length of the winch with room to spare, another 18” holder to reset, and a spare 10’ section for whatever random shit I may need.

Straps are great but the piece of mind that a chain gives you is head and shoulders above straps and wire rope. It is a bitch to lug around though.
