I just bought an 03 sequoia and it started doing something funny today.

The best way I can describe the noise is it roars when accelerating. Similar to the roar noise trucks due when you first turn them on in the morning and take off. It only happens after it’s been on for a while. I will come to a light and when I take off it sounds like it’s sucking in a ton of air (roaring) and and it will bump into 2nd gear.

it doesn’t do it on Initial start up only does it once it’s been running for a while. When I first turn it on it runs and shifts fine.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe the clutch on the fan is going bad. Any way to test it? Thanks in advance for any help.

What’s the temperature like when this happens? That’s your clutch fan kicking in, or at least that’s what it sounds like to me. They will come on thermostatically. So you could either have a cooling issue or an issue with the fan itself staying engaged.

Does the fan spin freely when the truck is off?

I’m definitely not a master technician, but I would be leaning towards the clutch fan being bad. At least it’s a fail safe and still spins, keeping the engine cool.

And of course, I have to ask, when was the last time the timing belt was changed?

It could also be your radiator fan bracket so just keep that in mind. If you replace your fan clutch and still does the same thing, then is probably your radiator fan bracket. Also make sure your cooling system is working properly, an engine that runs hot can cause your symptoms as well.

The reason I ask is because maybe it’s just time to do all of it. Water pump, fan, timing belt, The works. Give it a, for sure new lease on life and it should treat you well.

No problem. Please keep us posted, I’d like to know if the fan clutch fixes your issue if you decide to do it.

The sequoias have a condensor fan on them too. You may have an issue with that little guy too… albeit rare.

Make sure to use OEM parts if you can.

Not all the time, but enough for me to be curious about it. Most of the time the truck is fine. I get that sound in the video you shared and the same symptoms OP posted.

I'm due for a complete cooling system job (radiator, thermostat etc) and am leaning towards replacing the fan clutch too.

Aisin makes the OEM fan clutch for our trucks ( if you decide to go with it) let us know if that fixes your issue.

Surprisingly the noise went away on its on lol. I've been driving it around for a few weeks and the sound never came back. I verified that the fan still operates and also I have been checking the temp to make sure it doesnt get hot.

It did sound similar to the video but the sound went away.
