    Greetings folks,

I recently replaced a ceiling fan/light combo due to the old fan dying on me. When I bought the house there was three switches that appeared to operate the fan and light, although they never operated properly. You could turn the fan on and off with one switch (we’ll call it switch A), and the light on and off with another switch (switch B). The third switch (switch C) could turn the light OFF/ON only if the light had been previously turned on by switch B. Say you used switch B to turn the light on….then used switch C to turn it off, toggling switch B would no longer turn it back on.

Hoping this is somewhat making sense…I’m sure it sounds whacky and confusing.

Anyhow, I’m interested in trying to get these wired correctly. Ideally I would like one switch to control the fan independently and the other two switches to turn the lights on/off.

Seems to be that there is several different ways possible of wiring this up from what I’ve gathered on Google. This is what I know:

there’s one 12/3 going into the ceiling box for the fan/light combo.

there’s two 12/2 wires and two 12/3 wires going into the 2 gang box that houses 2 switches (switch a and b)

there’s one 12/3 wire going into the last box that houses switch c

NOW, as confusing as all that is to me, I’m hoping it all makes sense to some of you electrician savvy folks who can help me out. Any advice? Thank you all in advance

That’s a lot of wires. Some pictures would help.

    I agree with @Retired...finally

Switch A turns the fan on and off, period, that is it.
Switches B and C are 3-way switches for the light.

    12-3 to the ceiling box
    1 light or fan hot
    2 light or fan hot
    3 netural for both
    4 bare cooper ground

Apparently one of the 3-way switches is bad or wired incorrectly.
My guess would be it is wired incorrectly.
You'd need to get your DMM and see what powers what or call an electrician if you don't feel safe doing that.

The fan switch is what it is, nothing is needed.
The 3-way switches need to be addressed..
