    dear member slayer,
I use my truck about once or twice a month. Yesterday, started it up, check engine on solid, traction slippage light on solid, 4-lo flashing. Opened hood and pulled manifold cover and got a rat in the house chewed my foam under the cover and made a nest, and shat on my air filter cover. You said you been there, exactly where did the chewing take place? Thanks

A rat chewed my knock sensor up. Sucks that a teeny tiny little wire gets eaten so often. Luckily it is VERY easy to fix, took about 25 minutes to unbolt some stuff and pull the intake manifold off.

    Welcome from NY.

Sorry to hear about your issues with the rodents.
Stick some dryer sheets under the hood in several spots or spray it with peppermint oil, they hate that and will stay away. They also make a electronic rodent deterrent that you can hook up to the battery.

Knock sensor wires is where the little bastards got mine. Luckily I found the damage before it became an issue.KIMG1121.jpg KIMG1122.jpg

When my dash lights all flashed at once and I found the code was for knock sensor, I checked into it and pulled the intake where I saw where the rodents had been feasting on the ks harness. Dealer parts guy told me that he knew of a product called pepper tape and it was infused with pepper to spoil the taste. When no local suppliers could be found, I used liquid electrical tape or coating and brushed it onto the harness wiring and then sprinkled an abundant amount of cayenne pepper over the still wet liquid tape. After allowing time for drying, I reassembled and have had no further issues.

    success!
many thanks to you folks for the information, pulled the intake and sure enough, rat city. R and R ed the knock sensor harness, new intake gasket, cleared codes, works fine last a long time.
I plan to stuff smelly dryer sheets in there and drive much more often. I also trapped the rat bastard in my lawnmower shed, around the corner from my truck parking area.

thanks again for all the pictures and such, it was a real help.

Mice can do just as much damage IMO, I pop my hood pretty regularly to check for the signs. I had some slight damage last Month, but the peppermint oil spray I'm now using seems to be working great so far. Food for thought.

I live in the sticks, have a barn and tractor, etc etc etc. If the mice/rats are really living in there, glue traps surrounding the front wheels (so they can’t get up there at all! work just fine. About half the time you find them dead on the dallied board and about half the time they drag / chew themselves and get away. Also, put out traps with peanut butter, they love PB. For me, I just live with them. I’ve always got traps of some kind or another out…. Constant battle round here. Good luck!

My mechanic/car collector just found a nest inside the air filter housing on my 2007 Nissan Frontier. He installed a packet of Grandpa Gus's Extra-Strength Mouse Repellent, which he uses in his fleet of collectible cars.

I Amzonned some from this link. I drive the Tundra and Jeep TJ often enough to avoid this fate. The Nissie is a spare.
