    Hey guys I really need some help. So here’s the issue…prior to this week I’ve always heard a popping sound from under the truck but it was at least to my knowledge the front tires catching due to me not having trimmed my front bumper since I’m running 35’s.

    I now have a new Demello Off-road bumper I love that gives me a full 0 turning radius so I know my tires aren’t rubbing and that’s not where it’s coming from.

    My coworker got beside my truck and listened for it and he did hear it. Now the sound only happens when I go over a swoop or a depressed terrain (basically suspension going up or down or in other words being engaged) and whether my wheels are turned or straight it happens.

    now I did go slow at less than 5 miles and hour and we did hear it so truck was level then hit the dip and POP. Same thing when i reversed and hit the dip and POP.

    I’m worried it something with my suspension but also feel like it’s coming from somewhere in the center of truck but like I said only happens on terrain like this.

    The UCA’s are from JBA off-road and they had a major defect in the boots breaking prematurely so I already have the new ones and are set to be installed at the end of the month

    Could it be the tie rods worn out? Be advised it’s a 2010 and never replaced the tie rods but plan too @Coachbuilder1

    Okay guys still cant figure out what the popping noise is.

    I now have the @Coachbuilder1 shackles and tie rods installed but the sound is still happening and I was able to upload my videos to youtube so please follow the links.

    https://youtu.be/HDXL_m9AMqo

    https://youtu.be/C9fvnUmkjto

    I am thinking at this point it is either the following:

    1. inner tie rods

    2. lower ball joint/control arm

    3. CV axel going out

    Please if you could tag or recommend me to anyone that might be able to help

    @dirtydeeds
    @joonbug
    @14burrito
    @TXTundra2722

    @RussellVaughan is this similar to what you had?

    Again for everyone the set up I have is the following:

    JBA Off-road UCA's
    @Toytec Lifts 2.5 Aluma series
    @Coachbuilder1 Tie rods in front

    Running Method NV 17's with 0 offset
    Tire's are Nitto 35's

    To me, it sounds like a panel popping or something, because I hear it resonate a little. I had a popping sound on my Pro and it turned out to be the rear bolts of the skid plate weren't tight. When the truck would flex the plate would bind against the cross member and eventually pop. It would usually happen as I was backing out of my driveway, when I hit the bump.

    I plan on getting under the truck tonight to take off the sway bar and links via @Coachbuilder1 advice and drive it for a day or two like that and while I’m under there I’ll take a look at the skid plate too

    For me, it's a constant problem. Every time I take it to the dealer, they don't tighten it enough so I constantly have to go back under and tighten the 2 rear bolts.

    @19TurdPro so I got underneath right now so your saying tighten up the rear 2 bolts right? And possibly that is the problem?

    Also does that half moon washer need to be set in? (Feel like I already know the answer to this)

    Was also able to get pics of the front diff drop kit, it looks like one is t seated all the way

    the last 2 pics are of the lower control arm on the driver side

    Sounds similar to the noise I had with the TRD skid plate. They came out with a TSB which was basically to add spacers to separate from the cross member. I see you have an RCI skid but to me that noise sounds like metal on metal while flexing. Easy enough to remove the skid plate and see if the noise goes away.

    For me it was the problem, you've got a different skid, and a lot more going on underneath your truck than I do (mine's stock).
    But that sound sounds more like a ting than a pop. It has resonance to it, which tells me it's a piece of metal big enough to sing for a micro second, and very similar to the pop my skid plate was making.

    I'm still banking money on the skid.
    Those did it while they were stationary. While I did hear some slight popping noises when you were cycling back and forth, the major ones happened during chassis flex.

    @19TurdPro @Coachbuilder1 well I think I figured it out.

    I took off the skid plate and got under there and had my wife turn on the truck while I laid down in the front and low and behold it’s the inner tie rod.

    she turned the wheel every from right full lock to left full lock and I started looking and looking and continued to hear it then narrowed it down.

    video I took

    The popping I hear there is nothing compared to what you posted in your previous videos, am I hearing that right?

    So after speaking with David @Coachbuilder1 we came to the conclusion that it’s the inner tie rod. Reason it doesn’t sound the same is due to the tie rod having a load on it then releasing, for example as I backed out of my driveway I came off the drive way on to grass and that’s where the pop happens.

    now I did add the spacers on skid plate cause I didn’t have them on before so I will see if that makes a difference at all but I retightened my bolts but be aware as I was taking the skid plate off last night those rear bolts were on there really tight and were not lose at all (as I am running a RCI skid plate it is different than the newer TRD’s and I’m a 2nd gen and not 3rd gen).

    after I install the new tie rods I will see if it continues but I and David are very convinced it’s the inner tie rod

    Is the problem the tie rod, where it connects to the spindle?

    UPDATE:

    So after this last posts I thought I had figured out the problem which I will admit seemed like the skid plate.

    I added the poly rubber bushings as I had initially installed it wrong (without them) and needed to add them since I have the diff drop kit.

    Once I did that for the most part it went away completely, but still needed an alignment done.

    got the alignment done and steering felt WAY better, that was last week

    NOW all day I’ve been hearing a popping noise as I reverse, never happens when I’m In drive only in reverse. I have a few videos I’ll be uploading and plan on taking off the skid plate tonight to see if it’s happens with it off.

    I was about to ask if they had to mess with the skid plate. I constantly have to retighten mine because Toyota doesn't.

    So I don’t know if they had to for the alignment but I’m gonna check the bolts and everything tonight and if after tightening it continues then I’ll take it off.

    it sounds like something is constantly binding and coming from the center

    So you haven't changed the inner tie rods yet?

    No I haven’t and am really starting to wonder if that’s the issue, like I said I won’t really know till I drive without the skid plate and see if it continues

    I'm very interested in what you find. I'm having the same popping sound coming from my front end as well. I didn't notice it till I upgraded my steering rack with polyurethane bushings. I plan to jack up the front...possibly tomorrow and see if it's the tie rod, wheel bearing or ball joints.
