I had my 2019 serviced this AM and part of that was that they changed the trans fluid for the 60K mark. I drove home about 40 miles and just now noticed a couple spots of trans fluid on the garage floor. I crawled underneath to check it all out and the trans fill bolt on the drivers side was about to fall out. I think the spots on the floor are probably from just the sloppy cleanup from the drain or at least I hope? Questions

    1. As part of the trans fluid change do they drop the pan or just drain and refill the fluid?
(there is some evidence of fluid along the back edge of the pan but no fluid seems slung backwards or anywhere else)

    2. Does the Tundra use a trans gasket or RTV gasket?

I really do not want to drive back to the dealer to have the trans fluid checked and I do not have a way to connect to the truck to check the temp like I believe it requires?

I have a call back pending with the dealer as I am NOT happy.

Thank you for any and all help

Ok, the service manage called me back and I feel a little better I guess. He said there is no fluid pressure on the fill plug and they did not drop the pan but instead drained it through the lines. I crawled underneath with some de-greaser and a rag and cleaned it up a bit so I will be able to tell if there is seepage. The service manager said he will put a note in the record and offered me a free oil change (whoopee). I am still considering reporting this to Toyota Care though?

As others on here have had to pitifully realize and conclude.....after you take your beloved Tundra to the dealer (or other shop) for "service" you need to arrive to pick it back up with a full complement of tools and, while right there in front of the shop while they watch, check EVERY SINGLE fastener, connection and other mechanical or electrical attributes.

Jeeeeeeeeezuz. Yet another dealer horror story.

This was my first Toyota service and I was hoping it would be better than Ford. Maybe toyota needs some shop nannies to go over a check sheet during and after each procedure. Supposedly one of the more experienced techs worked on my truck today. I may not even take them up on the free oil change and just do it myself so that I know it is done right.

Umm. Unless you or a previous owner installed an aftermarket trans cooler, there are no such lines.

I was pissed and am trying to calm down now. Serenity now, serenity now! I am a Gen X'er and I guess I just expect stuff to be done right.

Maybe they used the drain plug on the bottom then or vacuumed it out?

Probably something like that. Maybe the service advisor misspoke.

All that is done is a simple drain and fill. No vacuum no nothing. But yes it has to be at a certain temp for which they use a scantool

I absolutely hate this… having to take it back to the dealer for a tranny fluid change. I’ve changed every fluid BUT the tranny myself. I don’t have the right scan tool and it’s so critical to get the right level. I have 10k to go before it is due…just under 50k on the clock now. All for lack of a dipstick.

Assuming the current level is correct, which at this point is what you are doing, you can drain, measure amount drained, replace same amount plus a little to compensate for residues and drips. Or am I missing something?? Well maybe the fluid temp should be similar when measured. Other than that, you would have the same fluid level you have right now.

Well, that’d get a portion of my fluid replaced, but not all of it. I haven’t seen how much is in the sump compared to a total amount. But assuming only half or less would get replaced this way, you’d have to do it multiple times, never really getting all of it.

Multiple drain and fills is the best method. You can read all about it here on other threads. Basically 3 or 4 drain and fills is about right.

You don't need a scan tool, just a paperclip

Like mentioned u could do the paper clip way. Another cheap option is torque app and a odbc adapter and monitor temps that way
