    Hi there,

I live in the Northeast and am looking for a used truck that I can use as my primary vehicle, as well as to get loads of hay, and plow my driveway.

I have found a 2009 Tundra - SR5 Double Cab 4.7L 4WD for sale w/ Bosch plow. It has been used to plow for the last 4 years, apparently. 4 driveways.

I had been looking for 3/4 ton trucks but I much prefer the appearance of the Tundra.

Do you think this truck will work for me? I've been told that it's not a good idea to plow with a 1/2 ton truck but perhaps incorrectly?

Thanks for any advice you might have. This is all very new to me (buying a truck, and plowing!).

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Light plowing shouldn’t be an issue. If you plan to have a side business I would buy a 3/4 ton with a plow prep package, preferably one with a solid front axle.

Thanks Coal Dragger! No side business but my driveway is very steep. I'll start from the top so the first pass is downhill. The engine on the one I found is 4.7. Would it make much difference to have the bigger engine?

Probably, the 5.7L has a lot more power.

One thing to watch out for on the 4.7L is the age and mileage on the timing belt. Supposed to be changed at around 90K is memory serves and can be a ticking time bomb if it snaps.

    Sure thing, good luck.

Some searching of the 2nd Gen technical sub forums might give you more answers.

    Hi there @BritChic Welcome!
I plow with my 2008 5.7 dc often. It works well. I rarely use low range 4x4- only in real deep snow in the pasture that hasn’t been plowed for months. I bet you’d be fine with the 4.7 in low range. :)

Anyone else's childish mind struggling to ignore "member & plowing" in the thread title?

I call for a committee to determine a new "less distracting" title for the thread before erasing the current from history.

Welcome from OKC! If I were gonna buy, most definately it would be a 5.7. Just get ready to spend on gasoline.

Thanks for the lovely welcomes and also for the encouraging info about plowing @Mountun Goat. I ended up getting the 5.7 (I pick it up on Saturday). Very happy. Do you recommend getting coils or lifted or (insert correct terminology here) or am I fine to plow without any adjustments? I'm getting a 7.6 Steel Boss HTX. My driveway is pretty steep here in Vermont. Lower AL sounds like a good move considering we just got a foot of snow here.

@COTundie - Ha! Can't believe my British sense of humoUr missed that one :)

If your plow has auxiliary lights you will want a heavy duty alternator. Dim lights & blowing snow are a bad combination.

Nice work on the 5.7. I can’t comment on the lift for the front of your truck. Ive had heavy duty 613 old man emu coils on the front of my truck before I had a plow so can’t compare to a oem suspension. :hattip:

Congrats and welcome. I was strongly considering putting a plow on my truck after the tractor/snowblower experiment failed. I have roughly 1000' of driveway to plow plus a ½ court sized area down by the garage. I'd heard it's hard on vehicles (tranny, frame, suspension). I still thought it through. Then I watched a 1-ton truck plow my driveway (we can get up to 2' overnight on occasion), and he was slamming into banks and just hammering the truck. He wasn't out of control or reckless, but I immediately changed my tune about plowing with a ½ ton. I think you'll be glad you have the 5.7L but I'd be cautious plowing anything deeper than 10" at a time, and it doesn't sound like it will be your daily driver either so that will help. I think if you can plow frequently enough that it doesn't stack up over a foot or more, you'll be just fine. Good luck. And yes, heavy coils up front recommended.

Without heavy coils, the truck will likely be on the bump stops more often than not, resulting in a very harsh ride. Some of which can be absorbed with max tire sidewall height and tire sidewall construction. Higher load rated tires equates to a stiffer sidewall.

Here is my bad boy. I have 2 western plows for it. A 7.5’ and 8.5’ i was too cheap to buy a factory light harness so i retrofitted my Ford F-250 harness to the Tundra. Works well except i have a switch to turn on the plow lights instead of them turning on by themselves. Yes there is a sticker that says Meyer but it was free so i just slapped it on the plow.

Greetings from another Vermonter! I bought my '18 DC with a 5.7 a year ago and promptly had a Boss HTX installed (I used GB Mechanical in Williston). And, of course, it was done RIGHT after the last snow fell last spring. :) But it's been working great for my driveway this winter. Not terribly steep, but 100 yards of gravel going uphill - and I'm in the foothills in S. Starksboro, so we always get more snow than forecast.

I'm also debating getting a lift kit for the front - doesn't quite get tall enough to suit the Boss specs (13.5" vs the recommended 14" high), so I frequently have to "encourage" the plow to get mounted. And after seeing the rear squat when towing some larger trailers (like a car carrier), I'm thinking I need to do something on the rear, too.

Here's my beast wearing his winter gear. Less the cap that got put on in December.

    Some heavier springs would help.

OME and other manufacturers make 650lb (stock), 700lb, & 750lb. Not sure how much you daily the truck when the plow is off, but 750# will be pretty stiff in the summer.
