Hello! New 2021 Tundra Owner here!

Hello Folks!

Took my 2018 Taco in for its 30k service today, and ended up trading it for a new 2021 Tundra Limited, TRDOR. So far, I’m thrilled with it! Much more “cush”, tons more power...and the trans knows what gear it should be in.

The only real issue is figuring out what I’m doing wrong with the remote start. Dealer walked me right through it with the fob during delivery, and I can’t get it to work again for the life of me. Gotta be operator, head space, and timing related for sure.

At any rate, thanks for having me here. Hope to contribute and learn how to get the most out of my new truck!

I think you have to activate the complimentary Toyota connect in order for the remote start from the fob to work.

 

Ah, that figures. Thanks for that info. Don’t really want to do that, as it’s a bit intrusive I think.

Before you try activating, curious to see if is needed or not. I never activated my complimentary Toyota connect, but it worked.

Try the remote start combo again. Could be possible your pressing the incorrect keys?

No dice. Tried again, both fobs, and nothing. I’ll take it back after Christmas and see what they say.

You are pressing lock on the key fob 3 times holding down on the 3rd press (sometimes have to hold a long time)? The lights will blink and then should start.

 

Yes sir. No luck. I know it worked when I left the dealer. It’s gotta be me.

 

That's a bummer. We were all hoping remote start from the key fob was independent of the Toyota Connect. Sounds like it is tied to it, therefore after the complimentary period, one would have to subscribe to continue with the feature.

Just for grins and giggles, I went back and accepted the trial offer, and got the activation code. The truck can’t connect to the server to accept the code now. Strange indeed. Cell signal isn’t great where I’m at, so maybe that’s part of it. I’ll try again in the morning. If I can get “the trial service” going, I’ll try the fob start again and report back.

My remote start works by pressing lock button twice and holding in down after the second push. Have never activated Toyota connect.

The fob is completely independent of the remote connect system. Your fob will always lock/unlock and remote start your '20 and '21 Tundra. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA0PNO8_Gzk

Well, I have an update:

Had to make a quick run to grab something at the store, so I figured I’d take the Tundra. As soon as it started, the “lady in the dashboard” said “communication update complete” or something along those lines.
Went to the communications app, entered the code from the email, and ran my errand.

Came home, and decided to try the fob remote start sequence one more time...and...** poof **...like magic...it worked. I’d definitely say there’s a better than average chance “the trial services” have to be enabled for this to work.

 

I mentioned this on another thread, I believe. Maybe YouTube? Anyways, I couldn't get it to work and called the salesperson. He drove to my house, asked for the remote and boom got it to work. He handed me the remote and I still couldn't get it to work. He said it has to do with how fast or slow you push the buttons. It was frustrating for sure. He stayed there until I was able to get it work. Since that visit, I had a few hiccups, but eventually got to work every time. Toyota has a video on YouTube on how to work the remote start. It might help!

 

Push the buttons faster. Two presses, hold the third but if your too slow, or fast it won’t work. Pause JUST long enough to hear the beginning of the beep. I had the same problem at one point.

 

Also, now that your connected..... start your truck from your phone. Mind Blown!

 

Since most 2020s are still in the one year trial period, it should be currently working. The question is, does anyone have an early 2020 that the trial had expired without additional extension or subscription, would the remote start still work from the fob?

The current theory is, the fob communicates with the truck, then it checks with Toyota Connect to verify subscription is active, then the truck turns on. If is no longer active, then it will not start.
