HELLA 500 lights, still cool? amber bulb upgrade.

Serious question guys - are hella/KC round style lights still cool? Back when I was a young lad, every truck in my high school parking lot had a pair or more on their roll bars and grille guards (I had 2 pair on my 87 hilux pickup). I have a new set of hella 500 black magic lights collecting dust in my storage room for 6 years now, hoping to put them to use. Plus I still like the look, bit of nostalgia.

I live in winter climate and a good pair of amber lights for fog and winter driving would probably be more realistic then off-road lights. Pre-dawn trips for fishing and hunting with white roads and heavy fog tend to happen a few times a year. Although I’ve never personally used amber lights, I’ve read they are a big improvement in these conditions. Lots of info online about this of course, but I’d be open to hear personal experience from anyone.

So question is would it be best to throw in a pair of amber H3 bulbs ($18) into the black magics and go that route? Not sure how amber bulb would do with the smoked housing. Can’t find anything on line of this being tried (maybe for good reason…). Or do I just need to buy the 500 amber version ($70/pair, has an amber lens and a regular bulb)? Which is better colored bulb or colored lens? Or both?

Don't really want to go to high watt or LED. I like lights that can actually be used on highway without getting high beamed. I still have to figure out a good mounting option…
