Purchased new by me from Norwalk Toyota in February 2002.

Crossing my fingers that I bring her back home in the next couple of weeks. Sold to a very good friend who had time to put her to use in his retirement while I settled down and started a family.

    To be continued...

Pickup has been scheduled for tomorrow. I'm jittery with excitement to see her again. Taking my 6 year old with me, I wonder if he'll crap his pants on the bench seat on the way home just to mark his turf.

Also hoping to do a pickup at Mr. Marv's on the way home if I can squeeze it all in, we shall see...

On the train, northbound. I’m committed at this point. My buddy is refusing to let me pay. I’ll need some way to work through that issue. I think when I sold it to him in 2010 he paid $6-7k for it.

Anyone willing to suggest ballpark on bro deal fair market value? Below 200k miles, 2 owners, maintained but not modified, probably some scratches, dirt and dog hair.

I’m thinking I have to at least get him to accept $4k or I’ll feel super guilty.

His replacement is a Kia Sorrento. He is downsizing the boat and his camper is pretty modest. Here is the most recent photo I have.

Had an '01 with 160k miles, sold it to a friend for $3k. A tree fell on it in a snow storm and crushed the roof. He sold it for $1200. The guy who bought it fixed it and had it on craigslist for $8k ! WTF ? I'd be willing to bet he got the asking price.

Thoughts on the truck. Comments appreciated.

    • gas tank door needs love, hanging on upper hinge only
    • Tailgate latch / handle also needs some love / investigation
    • Shell shocks are toast, can they be replaced?
    • Paint is as expected. Front driver fender replaced and looks off color-wise. Dare I drop big $ on white bedliner paint? Maybe that’s insane.
    • Front bumper looks ok but a winch and steel bumper might be better. Haven’t seen anything I like yet though
    • Rear bumper is mashed enough to justify a replacement. Need to review options. Hopefully nothing bent other than the bumper itself.
    • Some cleaning needed. Floor mats due for a new set.
    • Missing driver headrest. I inquired about that. Interesting because he returned the D rings in the stake hole pockets which he presumably removed when the shell went on years ago.
    • Bench seat works well in this truck. Especially since I have two boys. I think it stays.
    • Need to replace the amp (I have a spare 300/4 ready to go) and likely the head unit (maybe later if it works ok). Sub is missing but it wasn’t special. Door speakers were diamond audio, likely still there. All cables intact and even Sirius though antenna is snipped. Who cares about Sirius anymore.
    • Cargo light apparently had parasitic draw and toasted a few batteries. I don’t think they pulled the fuse. Haven’t inspected.
    • Reese brake controller since removed. I’ll probably replace with RedArc
    • Everything appears to f’ing work properly. Kind of beyond my expectations mechanically
    • Wheels tires and small lift I think? How loco do I go?
    • Taillights look good, maybe LED bulbs
    • Headlights look rough, need rehab and harness.
    • Drives exactly like how I remember. Better suspension than the Tacoma though I remember disliking my 1st Gen offroad Tacoma suspension so maybe I’m just an SR5 guy
    • Budget of $10-15k for a rehab to get a really nice truck?

My older son (age 6) has trouble with #2. My younger son does not. I find this trouble to be a bit disconcerting.

My buddy and his wife of 38 years are dog people. They decided it was time to go SUV and bought a Sorrento. They had a vent extension gorilla glued in trying to AC the bed for their dogs. They love living creatures with big hearts. I think they were a little bit worried I might be concerned about that part. They tried to clean it up some. I feel rather guilty that they went to such effort but I’m not sure I could engineer a much better solution.

Speaking of gorilla glue, goo gone ok on dash plastic or should I seek a new piece of center vent trim and say f it to that one? The alpine seems to work but without the amp I can’t be sure.

Haha you have kids, you should know about the “Noogle” a overpriced tube that connects to the ac vent and routed to rear seats for little ones, or furry ones if you so choose!

Nice find. I maybe wish they had asked me about it but this friend would probably have considered that to be an imposition. Ultimately it’s not super easy to AC a poorly sealed and poorly insulated 8’ truck bed with one vent and not freeze in the cab so I think they were destined to change out the vehicle. That and they are retired and it’s coming up on 20 years old. And without the motivation to buy something else, I wouldn’t have my truck back.

Yes, read about it a ton and for the most part we’ve been doing all of the non medical treatments for years. If I sound flippant or callous, it’s my odd way of blowing off steam about the challenges of travel while maintaining some form of control of the situation. Don’t want to make it sound like I’m any crappier of a dad than I actually am, PUN intended :)

Kids are definitely fun and they liven up any situation. The one thing I really wasn’t prepared for about parenting, though, is the resistance to leadership. I mean, I guess I always knew my leadership qualities were a bit abnormal or non-standard. But I think I was likely naïve about my child’s potential willingness to follow my advice and guidance.

I got a D in psych class (true story) so mostly I think the failure to understand how other brains work is a personal challenge. Or it’s possible that I’m merely lazy on this specific aspect despite being rather objectively not lazy with many other things.

Like the truck, we all have unique wrinkles.

OK, so, I need to start a prioritized list of work or I'll never get going b/c time is always tight these days.

    1. The absolute first thing I need to do is get it smog'd and do my DMV paperwork.
    2. As far as mods, the start should focus on convenience features:
      1. Replace one of the sockets with a USB charger
      2. Order up some new floor mats, these?
      3. Investigate keyless entry options (I swear it had a fob but need to test to find out, attaching instructions so I have them)
      4. Reinstall spare 300/4 amp and confirm stereo works, yank old sirius dock OR
      5. Re-wire head unit power to door speakers for now. I think I lean towards putting the amp in as long as the cables are a-ok which I think they should be
      6. Line up sub box (gotta bug Mr. Marv and maybe pickup Taco and Tundra at the same time if I can ever get to him)
      7. Get a key for the Leer lock cylinders (there are 6 of them since windoors) or new cylinders and key? Or is it maybe possible to do pop n lock? Should I just say f it on trying to lock a shell?
      8. Fix gas tank door (only top hinge attached, bottom hinge rusted off
      9. Tailgate handle/latch is a mess, not sure if that's repair or replace, power lock would be really nice there, backup camera too, maybe this?
      10. New shocks for the shell doors, they all seem shot, not sure where those can be purchased
      11. Clean center stack and/or replace bezel (don't know where to look for that type of part yet) and new climate rings?
    3. Once basic convenience is done, some basic maintenance
      1. Check and replace belts / hoses
      2. Diff and tran fluids likely needed
      3. Run through scanner, check for codes
    4. The next focus would be tow/haul capability
      1. Install RedArc brake controller
      2. New/bigger radiator?
      3. Full set of 5x17" wheels with 33's (maybe wildpeak, maybe ko2, maybe Toyo or Nitto, I dunno, too many choices)
      4. bigger brakes (may need MC work which would be a bit out of my league)
      5. Check leafs, coils and shocks (ride feels fantastic though, better than my 2016 Tacoma)
      6. Some solution for hauling 16' lumber via roof pipe rack (but the clean look is so nice) or tracks on roof and shell or ?? Maybe just f it and if I want to haul long stuff I leave the tailgate up and the shell window open and hang red flags/lights off it? I'd like a solution for hauling large stuff and the shell really complicates that.
    5. Last is cosmetics and performance stuff
      1. Black decals
      2. Front bumper?
      3. Rear bumper?
      4. winch?
      5. lift?
      6. grille
      7. fender flares
      8. paint
      9. headlights
      10. fog lights
      11. driving lights?
      12. ditch lights?
      13. backup lights?
      14. led bulbs
      15. Switch-Pros in sunglass holder / garage opener spot?
      16. Do something with missing switch blank next to fog light switch

OK, so, this irks me a tiny bit, I see based on my sticker I did have keyless entry but attempting to follow the procedures in the prior attachment lands me at "no joy" aka no flashy flashy.

Hmmmmmmm, not sure where to go next but I've been tempted to maybe take this thing to the dealer to have them give it a full inspection and maybe that's something they can help with due to my incompetence. Unless maybe my tactrix and techstream works on a 2002?

Ok so smog is done, DMV virtual reg started, new bezel ordered. I can own all things audio.

to keep chipping away at this, I probably need some veteran advice. Pick off the low hanging fruit and stuff. @FrenchToasty and @empty_lord any good advice on easy stuff to get me ramped up? I think I’d really like to figure out keyless entry but the programming procedure saw no flashing lights.

a good cleaning is obvious but leaving it filthy has some appeal too.

Cargo light was apparently a parasitic leech and killed several batteries so some mechanic spent 3 days and nuked it. Not that the light itself is of any value with a shell. I might repurpose the switch to feed bed lights since a TW dude sent me some which are triangle style and even say Tundra on them.

For the short term I have bursts of 15-30 minutes so just want to make decent forward progress somehow.

I could potentially work on the electrical and a Switch-Pros setup as a nice base of operations but feature adding seems like a phase 2 sort of thing. I assume I should focus on fixing problems and cleaning up messes.

Not even the same level as Dan the Man, but thanks!
I would start with general maintenance items, you can log into a Toyota owners portal thru Toyota and enter your vin to see what service has been done/recorded.
I would first look when the timing belt and water pump have been done, but lower ball joints should be looked at ASAP if their age is unknown or if oem wasn’t used.
After that go to the engine; the is simple stuff you can do, clean the throttle body, replace the pcv valve, clean the MAF sensor. Clean battery terminals. If your confident, do plugs and be ready to swap coils; or maybe check coils first and then order if large cracks present, then do the plug job. 4wd? Maybe do a diff and transfercase fluid swap. Next do a Tammy(stupid spell check, TRANNY) fluid swap.
Look for the hand models build/rejuvenation thread, lots of good tips and tricks from there.

Fair enough, confirm good mechanical condition first. I had assumed based on how I know my buddy operates and based on how it feels. Pretty much exactly like I remember from 11 years ago. I think I’ll run it though the local dealer just to get a feel for what they think and see where we are at.

Thanks for this and all the rest of the guidance. I assume w/p is water pump?

@Puppypunter , I have an incoming radio bezel which is bigger than the current one (double din). The Alpine in there is 10 years old. Cables are in place for a 300/4 under the passenger seat. I even have a spare 300/4 which got refurbished and has been lying around for a few years.

I think empty lord suggested one of these but I have trouble buying OEM radios :) He also mentioned that the 3rd gen Tacoma radio is going to be too big for an opening meant for double din / “86”. So I thought I might pick your brain on aftermarket options. I was also planning to review the pioneer lineup once I know the bezel dimensions.

If upgrading the interior is going to be an initial focus (I wasn’t planning on that at first) then aside from cleaning, I need to source a blank or replacement switch for near the fog switch, a brake controller, floor mats and probably some sort of subwoofer.

For floor mats we like weather tech? If so then I have to decide grey vs black. Most of the interior is lightish grey so I may go that way even though it’s very light.

not sure if I should do the Switch-Pros now or later.

I’m guessing I can ask the dealer about keyless entry since my window sticker said it came with the truck but the programming sequence didn’t do anything to indicate it’s in place right now? And as far as locking goes, I’ll try to search but not sure if we have options for auto locking the tailgate and/or the leer windoors. I assume not much there and I have to assume stuff in the bed is fair game for the taking.

I might also want to replace some of the interior lighting with LED bulbs.

I may have a switch blank by the fog lights laying around. I can look around when I get back from Knoxville. You can just have it because I'm never going back to no fog lights.
