Heat shield

    So I got under my 2010 tundra for the first time last night after I had been hearing a rattle after driving 30-40 minutes. I pulled out the loose heat shield that covers the front portion of the exhaust system. The lock nuts are tough to move as they are pretty rusted and the shield's holes are slide off the bolts. Any suggestions about an easy fix or if I even need to put it back on

    Use a penetrating oil to loosen the nuts and use large washers. That's what I did.
    Did the same thing on the 4runner and eventually removed one of them.

    I forgot to thank you , it took me 2+ hours to loosen the 5 washers that were in the worst shape, found replacements at the local hardware store - I already had the washers. Going to put the heat shield back on this weekend.

    If you do not put the heat shield back on (totally understand) I would use some exhaust wrap so you do not have issues down the road.

    On the exhaust wrap, just to let you know (not everyone knows this), install it wet and wrap it tight. When done wet it again and make sure it is tight. Then start your vehicle. It will smoke like hell, but you will have a really tight exhaust wrap that looks and performs good.

    No problem, that is a good idea about wrapping the pipes. My 4runner floors got pretty warm after I removed them.

    So this is an old post but I’m sure people are still having these fall off. I did’t want to mess with removing the nuts as I broke one of the studs off.     I slid one of the clips on the stud first and then put another one over the front side to keep it in place. I then used a small diameter socket tap them into place. No messing with the nuts and it looks like it will keep them on for the long run.

    Thank you, Sir for this perfect solution! Order placed. Reviving this old thread in hopes it helps someone else that had their heat shield mounting holes rust through.

    Glad I used the search bar to find this! I have been dreading attempting to use penetrating oil to loosen the nuts that have pulled through.
