This thread is to document my 2022 Tundra ownership experience, the places it takes me and the adventures I have with it.

Well, after 6 years of driving one of the finest pieces of Toyota engineering other than the Hilux pickup, a First Gen Tundra, the time came to upgrade. In February of 2022, I placed a deposit on an allocated Tundra at my local dealership.

My package of choice was a short box CrewMax SR5 TRD Off Road. Despite the Hulk Hogan mustache, the TRD OR offered features I wanted in a truck to take my family on adventures here in the northern wilds of Canuckistan. The MTS, DAC/Crawl Control and locking rear differential were worth dealing with a little bit of chrome. I chose the SR5 because it was significantly cheaper than the Limited and it also gave me the smaller screen. I'm not a fan of big screens and have never liked the recent trend of screens poking above the dash. The Limited also doesn't add any options that I wanted or needed, so the higher price wasn't worth it.

I went with a short box for the smaller turning radius, and because after having 6ft and 6.5ft beds on other trucks I've never found I fully used them. I'm the guy who would rather put bigger loads on a trailer so a short box is plenty for camping gear, fishing/hunting gear, dead animals and day to day chores.

Due to The Great Panic, my truck was delayed twice. Finally, on July 25th I got the call that it will be at the dealer and ready on the 29th. I'm fortunate to have a great dealership that is low pressure and super friendly. It took about 4 hours for me to do a very in depth inspection, test drive, do the paperwork, get my insurance, go out for my registration and licence plate and do a final walk through. I also set up an appointment to have a Console Vault and Go Rhino RB20 running boards installed, as they're on order and will be a week or so coming in.

Pics and more details will come when I have more time to write but a couple initial notes:

    - Build date is June 2022

    - Payload is 1395lbs

    - QC seems to be very good, I didn't notice any of the issues some people have spoken about

    Initial Impressions

Coming from a smaller, less powerful and less updated 1st Gen, ths truck is a serious step up in pretty much everything. More power, more torque, more room, way more storage, more creature comforts and extremely smooth handling.

As noted above, the QC on my truck seems very good. I haven't noticed anything that concerns me. Wind noise is about typical of all half ton trucks I've driven and less noticeable than in the 2021 F150 I drive at work.

With regard to power and torque, this truck goes like a scalded cat. I have yet to put it in a head to head, but seat of the pants feel says it will outrun my work F150 with an EcoBoost. My neighbor has a new Ecoboost, so one day we may actually put it to the test.

The 8 way power seats and telescoping wheel are a God-send for me, since as a stocky 5'5" raccoon I find manual seats to be a compromise at best. I'm never quite comfy in them, but these power seats are perfect. I will admit that the First Gen seats are a bit more comfortable, but they had 200,000kms on them so were nicely broken in. We'll see how these break in.

The mirrors are excellent. Zero complaints with them.

    More to come...

    Things I really like:

    - The storage under the rear seat is huge. The dividers are really neat, with a cool "Easter egg" stamp on them (see pics below) and have slots for an ultralight fishing rod and a couple guns.

    - The armrests are fantastic. So much better than the stupid dip Fords have right where I put my elbow.

    - The cargo lights are really bright

    - The truck came with a 12,000lb hitch, so all I had to do was add a 2" ball and I'm set to tow right away.

    - The blacked out badging is sweet.

    - More to come...

Things I think Toyota missed on:

    - Tow hooks up front...duh! Not super critical for me, since my dirty little secret is my 1st Gen doesn't have front tow hooks and I've never needed them. I'd rather have them than not though.

    - Rear bumper corner step. As a short guy, I would have appreciated it. As it is, I just face back works, hop my ass up on to the tailgate then spin around. Pretty easy, but I'm also just a young pup in my early 30's.

    - Map pocket on the back of the driver's seat. The passenger side has one, why not put on on the driver's side too?

    - Chrome mustache, grille logo and rear bumper inserts. I really don't get it. They just clash with the rest of the truck. Somebody get me in touch with the head of Toyota's aesthetics team, I have questions. As it is, I'll probably be getting the chrome wrapped.

    - Maybe more to come??

    Finally in the driveway:

Last family picture before dad takes the First Gen home with him. It will find its way back to me some day.

    The Vision:

    The Basic Dude Truck.

A truck set up for day to day family life but also capable at a moment's notice to travel into the remote Canadian wilderness on resource and logging roads. Not a hardcore off road truck but not one afraid of some gravel, mud or snow. Camping, fishing, hunting, towing a boat and home improvement projects are what this truck will be set up for.

    Current Mods:

    - Black Armour bed mat
    - Diamondback SE tonneau
    - Diamondback Cross Bin 8
    - Console Vault
    - Go Rhino RB20 running boards
    - Falken Wildpeak 275/70R18

    Future Mods

    - 4 more cleats on the Diamond back
    - Timbren bump stops
    - Yellow fog lights (probably Diode Dynamics)

    Long Term/Lower Priority/Dream Mods:

    - Billet tied downs
    - General Springs HD springs (towing/hauling/slight height addition)
    - CBI Covert bumper
    - Warn winch
    - Levelling kit (not yet convinced I need one right now)
    - Upgrade suspension (also not yet convinced I need it)

    Black Armour Bed Mat

First mod has been installed, a Black Armour bed mat. It's thicker than the Toyota OEM mat and was about $125 CAD more iirc. It's excellent quality and the fit is perfect. I'm extremely happy with it and it does a great job of preventing stuff from sliding around.

Diamondback SE with Cross Bin 8

This is hands down my favorite mod so far. The functionality it adds to the truck is amazing, and it looks pretty awesome too. The fit is very good and the quality of workmanship is definitely there.

    A few notes on install:

    - Diamondback claims 45min to install. It was closer to 90 minutes for me. I'm a welder by trade and mechanically inclined. It was the rinky dink adjusting that took time.

    - Have a second person helping. It's easy enough to get everything on to the truck, but in order to adjust the locking bars to snug the cover down you'll want some weight on it. I had The Woman sit on each panel as I set the locking bars.

    - If you install a Cross Bin like I did, you'll have to re-adjust the locking bars.

    - Diamondback suggests using self tapping screws to secure the Cross Bin for bumpy driving. Who really wants to drill into a brand new truck though? Use the bed cleats that come with your truck, slide the front two up against the Cross Bin and snug down. Problem solved. (See pic in my Load Out post below)

You used the word upgrade, not modernize. Hmm.

    Sweet truck!

It's a pretty big upgrade in capability and safety features, which is why we bought it. The Woman felt that with a new baby, a larger and safer truck would be a good idea. But yes, it's more of a modernization. Lol

A/C run off. It was 95 degrees and I'd just gotten home having been running the A/C on full blast the whole drive. :D

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to getting out in the backwoods with this truck. I'm not sure how far I want to go until I get the better A/T tires on, but some light duty stuff is in the near future.

    Console Vault

Installed this yesterday. It takes up 2/3 of the console but I like the secure storage. I can leave my binos and a knife in the truck full time and have a safe place to dump valuables if needed. For you guys who live in a free country, it's a good thing to have if you ever want to leave your gun behind (why would you though??).

Yep. Pretty sure all doublecabs from 2005 have a roll down rear window. It's a great feature.

    Post Road Trip Thoughts

We just got home from a 850 mile round trip from north western Alberta to southern Alberta. This trip was a mix of plains and rolling hills with average speeds of 60 - 65mph. We did the trip down in 7 hours and the trip back in 7.5 hours, each time only taking a couple 15min breaks so little Ass Kicker could stretch and have a diaper change.

Overall, I remain impressed with this truck. It has taken the spot of Best Road Trip Truck of all the trucks I've owned ('94 Toyota pickup, '11 Sierra 1500, '09 RAM 1500, '13 F150, '05 Tundra). The radar cruise control is by far my favorite feature so far. It just makes road trips effortless. I never really thought that turning cruise on and off due to slower traffic ahead or adjusting my speed as traffic ebbed and flowed was much of a hardship, but I did notice significantly less fatigue due to being able to just let the truck do its thing.

I played with the lane departure assist, but I remain unconvinced. Our roads here in Alberta are generally piss poor and often the lane markings are faint. The truck seemed to have trouble on occasion maintaining its lane. Also, when coming up to a median crossing on a divided the highway the truck would try to follow the exit lane before correcting back into the travel lane.

The seats are very comfortable for both myself and The Woman. I could have done 12+ hours behind the wheel if needed and not been sore.

The motor ran excellent. It's very smooth and quiet, which is great because I hate exhaust drone. I kept it in Eco mode for the duration of the trip and averaged 12.5L/100km or right around 19MPG in Freedom Units. Despite being in Eco mode, the few times I needed to punch it to make a pass there was ample power available that would push me back in my seat and get the job done with power to spare. This truck has more get up and go in Eco mode than my '11 Sierra 5.3L V8 or my '13 F150 5.0L ever did.

We began our travel days at stupid-o'clock in the morning, meaning it was dark for the first 3 hours or so on the road. The headlights on this truck are fantastic. Zero complaints there. However, that leads me to a couple minor things I don't care for.

First thing can be partially mitigated. Due to the design of the gauge cluster and dash, there is a large amount of reflection on the driver side window at night. It was to the point that it was difficult to see anything in my sideview mirror. I dimmed the dash lights that helped some, but I feel that Toyota should have shrouded the gauges better.

The flat bar style switches take some getting used to in the dark. I have to feel for the divider nubs and ensure I'm on the right switch. I much prefer the old school knobs that a blind man with sausage fingers can operate. The other disadvantage to the flat bar switches is that when someone puts something in the center console where the phone holders are, like a water bottle for example, it has a tendency to hit the diff lock switch. This won't do anything since the truck won't let the diff lock engage unless you're in 4lo but it does yell at you and flash a warning on the screen.

A couple other things I've noticed that are annoying to those of us who use trucks for truck stuff:

    1. The truck won't let you move with the driver's door open. If you have the door open and put the truck in drive, it sets the park break and bitches at you until you put it in park, close the door and then go back into drive.

    2. I was backing up through some long grass and even though I had disabled the backup auto brake thingy, the truck still sounded like a spaceship on collision course with an asteroid due to all the alarms going off.

    3. The seatbelt alarms are beyond annoying. I always wear my seatbelt when on the road but at a boat launch, while hunting, when checking a fence line on a farm or shuttling stuff around the yard I'll often have the belt off. Also, when The Woman moved from the left side rear seat to the middle rear seat while on the road to check on AK, the alarms went off and pitched a fit until I pulled over to stop the truck, turn it off and then turn it back on again. It can't figure out that a person has moved seats. I'll be asking my dealer to disable all the seatbelt alarm, though I'm not sure if they will.

    4. Michelin LTX Trail tires are trash on anything looser than pavement. We did some short driving on a gravel road and the truck was skittering all over the road. Driving the same road with my '05 and the Cooper ST Maxx tires felt planted rock solid.

Again, overall I give this truck a 8.5/10. It's pretty damn close to perfect but Toyota did miss the mark on some really minor, inexpensive and easy to implement features that truck guys need.

PS: I still haven't needed tow hooks.

Right around what my 15-year-old dinosaur with its "awful" fuel economy gets on the highway. o_O

I do get an alarm if I try to drive any distance with a door open (as I found out when Mrs Punishment jumped out one time when we got to our lake lot and neglected to shut her door properly) but I haven't gotten any obnoxious alarms when I've been in and out and driving without my seatbelt on while trying to hitch up my trailer. Sometimes it's good to be a dinosaur.

The Michelin Defender H/Ts on my truck are good enough on gravel; my truck is the most stable vehicle on gravel I've ever owned. (I don't do any real off roading, though.)

One of those is on the list if the dealer won't disable the alarms.

My '05 would be around 14 or 15L/100kms on the highways so this is marginal improvement for me. I would never trade in a 2015+ Tundra for a 3rd Gen due to fuel economy. Fortunately, fuel economy wasn't a big part of why I bought this truck. If I wanted to save the planet, I'd just drive my Corolla. :D

After owning all the trucks I have, and driving all the ones at work I do, I honestly believe people claiming 10L/100kms or 22+mpg or better on a half ton pickup are full of shit. Maybe at 100km/h, on a flat prairie highway in summer without the AC on and with a tailwind. If I'm bumping 20mpg with my family on board and 4 days of supplies in the bed, I'm happy.

I think the Defender is a better tire. The LTX Trail definitely suck.

A reply in support! Excellent write up & detail. Having done a 5500km trip in mine I agree with/ understand exactly where you are at.

love the radar cruise, it’s awesome, and hate - never use any lane tracing/centring on either of our vehicles. It sucks / annoying

Comfort, we drove from TO to Fredericton in a day, & was very comfy for that haul. Power, well I came from a Ridgeline which held its own, but no comparison. :)

The flat bar switches at night or when dark are terrible. I struggle to see the label above the switch clearly on a glance. Until I get some muscle memory I guess, give me the blind sausage finger switches too lol!

Even if dealer won’t shut off alarm for seatbelts in front they will for the back. Mine did no questions. Never tried moving with door open but I see how that can be annoying. As can sensor beeps. I think because there are so many they make you stop listening to them & it defeats their purpose.:monocle:

Tires are personal - I scrapped Michelin’s day one - but Wildpeak AT3W have done great on gravel/ dirt for me and are rated true all weather if you’re not switching out for winters.

glad your lovin your ride man!

Thanks. Nice to hear I'm not the only one finding little design flaws.

I'd like the Falkens but will probably go with the Cooper AT3 XLT since they're significantly cheaper. I'm running the Michelin's until winter when I'll buy Nokian Hakkapellitas.and then in spring I'll get better A/T tires.

Today was exterior prep day. Before the long winter sets.in, I wanted to get the paint in top shape

I washed it, used Iron-X, washed again, clay mitt and then used Jescar Powerlock+ polymer sealant.

Thanks @War Machine for the recommendation on the Powerlock. It turned out fantastic!
