Thoughts/info on the new GR Corolla?

    Seems promising.

Sounds fun but I’m skeptical of the 3-cylinder. I’m closely watching the GR86 and will likely pick one up in a year or two if car sales stabilize.

These GR cars look like a nice change for Toyota in the US. They've been in Japan for a while. 3 cylinders sounds so strange but I'm sure they work fine.

The GR Corolla is gonna be the US version of the GR Yaris. So 3 cylinder, direct-injection turbo & add Torsten front/rear diffs. No center diff but a center coupling that can split f:r- 60:40, 30:70(sport) or 50:50 (track)Very nice.

But the engine is the star. 1.6l, ball-bearing turbo, 3 cylinder, 257hp/265tq, Dohc, 12 valve in a curb weight of under 3k for the Yaris.

Road & Track just did an article of someone already getting it to almost 500hp with stock cams, pistons, rods. Full bolt-ons- turbo, maf, fuel, valve springs. I mean the cylinder head must be a work of art in stock form.

This car will be a future collector if they don’t water down the mechanicals. I’m saving and will get one the last year it is offered. Still kick myself for not getting a Focus RS.

What kind of internals is in the 1.3, idk much about that engine. I was surprised to learn the tundra has forged Crankshaft and connecting rods, stuff you see in the late model LS6 and LT’s. So I’d assume they’ll give it forged internals?

New type R looks neat too. They made it look less vulgar with the body work and said it should sound better. The debate of weather its going awd or not is still up there. I personally doubt it cause a big part of this car’s performance is weight which they went out of their way to save a lot of it.

The current R is a track phenom. I have no inside information, but I would wager big stamps that it will remain a front driver.

Totally agree about the apparent new look with the upcoming release. I also love the sleeper look of the new SI.

The GR Corolla will make plenty of power, 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, to be more precise, from a 1.6-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. The engine is mated to a short-throw, rev-matching 6-speed manual, an increasing rarity in the automotive world.

Dang, i didn't even know that. I'm kinda out of touch on subaru's now

Before i decided i wanted/needed a truck more than a faster car, a white hatch sti was on the top of my list.

Had a 2018 RS, and that thing rode like a brick on steel wheels. Kids would get car sick in it so got rid of it after 2 years. Hoping this rides a bit better, as I would love to have a nice manual car to zip around in and hand down some day.

I also hope they don’t price this thing out of orbit. AWD + manual + 300 hp sounds nice, but not if it’s $60k.

I had to see what a Corolla XSE was going for…31000.00. I would think the GR would be in the low to mid 40’s. In that price range I could think of a few other cars I would spurge on first.

That would be about right really. Unfortunately that is the range of nearly all the hot hatches. I would rather not spend that much on a hatch, no matter how good it is to drive.

    Msrp
    VW R $42k
    Civic Type R $40k
Focus RS or ST $26k (good on Ford for pricing right)
    AMG A45 S $55k

To my eyes this is much more attractive than the current Civic TR. It does look that the upcoming CTR is more toned down...we'll see.

The GRC should be an absolute blast to drive. I imagine the combination of a limited production vehicle and strong demand is going to result in significant dealer markups...
