With the shortages and insane currency inflation, the article says the tires are actually hugely valuable

Yep. Can be traded for food or basic necessities in a country with high scarcity of basic commodities.

Socialism is working its magic down there. Some of the best oil for making rubber/asphalt product is harvested in Venezuela.

I feel bad for the employees. The truth is that Venezuela is shutting down. Thats a reality. Socialism n communism is coming toward them like a blaze. This is one of many companies that have shut down. I guess if you were on Goodyears side u would have done the same. Never the less they should have thought of a better lay off program. Can they make a collective petition or lawsuit or class action?

I’m guessing the Venezuela court system is a little bit hard to navigate for such things.

Venezuela is a failed state, just like the USSR in 1989-1990. Hopefully they can get their shit together in the next couple of years, but somehow I doubt it, considering how widespread corruption is in that society. Everybody says corruption is rampant in Russia as well, but the military did have a sense of honor, none of the nukes were sold off to terrorists at the highest bidding back when the USSR collapsed. I somehow doubt that Venezuela has such a sense of honor, such a sense of patriotism, yeah no nukes in Venezuela, but I feel like corruption is one of the main causes of the collapse of their economy, along with price controls and building the entire state around high crude oil prices.

Not too surprising. Sucks for the workers. Venezuela has had a habit of nationalizing companies and running them into the ground like they did the oil industry. No excuse. Goodyear executives might have decided to cut and run since Venezuela's economy is in dire straights. Venezuela's heavy high sulfur crude was for a while only being refined in Texas and Louisiana. Those refineries had to reach out to Canada to supply their heavy high sulfur crude to keep the refineries running. Venezuela had at one time one of the strongest economies in SA. I think Venezuela was ranked 8th at one point in crude oil exports. A lot of what they produce now is sold to China to pay off debt. China is not stupid. Now the Ruskies are positioning long range aircraft there and the occasional naval ship. Curious to see how that goes......

With the way things are in Venezuela I'm sure those tires can be bartered for other items.

Not just any long range aircraft. Nuclear capable aircraft. Kennedy didn't allow Cuba to have them. I wonder what pres. Trump will do?

Time to enforce the Monroe Doctrine. Send the Marines down there if needed like other Presidents used to do years ago. Don't need congress to do it either. US Naval Blockade too.

China is investing, er "loaning", billions of $ in SA as part of their one belt one road policy to dominate world economies. China needs to get out of our hemisphere of influence.

Because it sounds good on paper and can be sold to the voter very easily to sway them. In the end, the results of Socialism are awful and we are left with 2 classes of people. The majority (poor and subservient with no power) and the minority (political class rich controllers). Its proven throughout history, but that isn’t taught anymore!
