In the most far-reaching shake-up since the company emerged from bankruptcy more than eight years ago, General Motors will shutter three North American assembly plants and two other facilities, while also eliminating 15 percent of its salaried and salaried contract workforce, moves that together will cost an estimated 14,700 jobs.

The cuts are part of a plan to adapt to changing market demands favoring SUVs over sedans and coupes, while also shifting focus to the electrified and self-driving vehicles GM sees as central to the industry’s future.

Hope no one here is affected by this.

few years back they told us SUV are gas guzzlers and people want small cars...I'd like to know if they plan on outsourcing those jobs or opening new factories outside the U.S.

From what I just heard on the radio, 8100 are upper management or white collar jobs and the rest are line works or blue collar jobs as they stated on the radio, buyouts for upper management and they said some of the blue collar workers where offered job at other plants. I hope the families affected will be ok.

I feel like its my fault Lol. Couple of my buddies were sure pissed at me when I crossed over to Toyota. Chevy, Ford or Dodge is the only way they go. I do feel bad for the workers. It’s not their fault directly. Maybe these other manufactures could take note from Toyota and not keep changing their platforms expecting to recoup all the money they invested. Maybe they should refine the models they already got. Dial it back and make quality.

    I know right?

Sucks to see anyone lose a job, and it can’t be easy making that decision. Sounds like a lot of buyouts, and offering positions at other plants.

I supported the Flint, Michigan workers...

Funny, had to drive it today. Lexus was still blocked in with snow, and I had around 1000 lbs of “stuff” that fell off my truck today.

Maybe they should ease up on the built-in obsolescence and build a quality product that will hold up? There's a mindset in this country that a after 100k you need to start thinking about the next vehicle. It doesn't have to be that way.

Exactly. It’s a waste of materials. Everyone wants the next greatest green machine but instead they are just creating more waste by buying the next new gadget/vehicle all the time. Look at me I’m saving the earth and I’m super cool cause I have the latest and greatest. I get it, it’s fun to have a new truck or car. But we’re all paying the penalties for that type of thinking. Shit, I know I’ve done it! One of the main reasons I bought the Toyota is because I was tired of feeling like my shitty American vehicle was about dead at 100,000 miles. I wanted something that will last me. Like the old-timers used to do. Have the same damn truck for 30 years LOL.

Actually I think it would be cool if Toyota made a few changes on the service side of things as well. Make it easier for me to maintain my transmission and AIP pump LOL

The owner of the place I work at has a 15 Silverado 1500 with 94xxx, the transmission took a dump this weekend. GM tech said its not worth rebuilding. 94k and it’s done, he rags the hell out of me for driving a Toyota.
Side note, he is on point about maintenance.

My friends, who work for GM in the Renaissance Center in Detroit were pissed at me when I pulled in towing my Camaro at the Camaro Nationals back in June. I told them GM did me wrong on my last 2 SUV's and I had enough. Plus I got a heck of a lot more for less money with the Tundra and better reliability then the Chevy/GMC trucks.

It does suck to see/hear about people losing their jobs.

Damn straight! I love me and LS motor! It’s what surrounds it that seems to have its faults. It seems with Toyota you get what you pay for. They have their issues but it seems to be much much less. Of course I would love to support Chevy but I’m not gonna throw my money away on something inferior. Keep paying for a vehicle loan my whole life just to keep them in business? Nope. They are one of my top picks for HD work. It seems the 90s model’s were pretty decent as well.

It’s just sad it has to be this way.

They’re jumping in the electric and automated bandwagon, killing off sedans like ford, yet Americans will pay more for German sedans sold on a bunch of lies about emissions... go figure.

What happens when all those people who buy SUV’s and bigger vehicles when the gas prices go up...

I get the appeal of electric, but there is no infrastructure in place to support it. To the best of my knowledge, we have not built new power plants, and with the desire to not use coal burning for electrical generation, how do we plan to support increase use of electricity in vehicles?

Also, self driving vehicles won't work unless every car is self driving and traffic flow is controlled by a computer. Too many idiots out there driving to 100% rely on a self driving car for me.

Man, that bites for everyone involved. Being in the ship repair business I've been laid off quite a few times, and it sucks. I did see where there offering 3k of those 14k jobs with a relocation package.

GM should never have been ‘bailed out’ in 2009 the first place. ‘We’ wasted our money on them. As a bonus, the bondholders got screwed. Takes time for karma to catch up. Her she is.

Plenty of case studies on large corps like GM out there written by smart people. I could get political, but it would make too much sense. Bottom line is it takes a SERIES OF MISTAKES to get to a point of failure. When failures are ignored or masked over, then you are prolonging the agony of proper correction.

Bummer for the employees. May they find opportunity elsewhere. Maybe some new Toyota plants?

    W. Edwards Deming is a great person to study. He helped Toyoda post WW2 become what it is today. The guy is an unsung legend.

This stems from a lot of baby boomers and the 3k oil change/100k new vehicle time. Now when baby boomers were raising Gen X’rs, vehicles were reaching the end of the life span at 100-150k miles (late 70-90’s).

I have to admit, I’m bad on this, and the Gen X in me can’t help myself. To be honest, I have owned like 36 vehicles and I’m 44, started driving at 14. The longest I have ever owned a vehicle is my current 03 TJ. I have no choice to hold onto my current vehicles to ensure retirement in 5.5 years. There is a damn good reason I chose a Lexus for my commuter car. Reliability is top notch, and a blast to drive. I can see a Lexus IS-F or RC-F as my retirement beater with a heater.

I have serveral friends with GM 1500’s (01-04) with over 200k and the factory drivetrain with minimal issues. My FIL is one of them and is absolutely the worst person when it comes to maintenance.

Reliability is there on most manufacturers, it just depends on what you want to deal with. I have yet to see any vehicle that doesn’t have some issues. I know for a fact, I will be doing head gaskets on my DM around 150k miles and probably injectors at the same time. There will go 5k. By that time at my current mileage/yearly average, a truck will be 110,000.00. I’ll gladly spend 5000.00 on that.

T'was a good read. Very accurate. Couple of things I didn't know.

    Bailout should have never happened.
