Love My new 2020 SR5...except the sound quality of the audio system. Everything works fine but use to much better quality from previous F150 factory sound system. Any recommendations on upgrading. Would better speakers solve problem or do I need to upgrade entire system?

It's hard to say. There are many that are satisfied with just changing the speakers. Then their are those who weren't and ended up adding an amp.

New speakers wouldn't hurt but those alone might not meet your expectations.

Hello from Fort Worth! Having the new truck is grand! I definitely love mine. I agree on the stereo. It needs a little boost.

As a fellow former F150 owner (2013 F150), I'd suggest upgrading the amp first. I've got a sub, 5-channel amp, and speakers installed; I had the sub/amp installed first, with the speakers a bit later. The reason I recommend the sub/amp first (or just the amp if you're not into bass) is because to me, the sub/amp improved things enough that I felt I *almost* didn't need the speakers.

Concur on the 'quality' at least as far as sound goes. My F150 had the 4.2" head unit (and if you know which one that is, you KNOW what a steaming pile of crap that was), and while the sucker froze up all the time, I do have to admit that it had pretty decent sound quality.

I recommend contacting James @ Tech12Volts; they sell an awesome sub enclosure (I paired it with a Kicker shallow mount) and a JBL Stadium 5 amp that works fantastically in my truck (also a 2020 SR5).

Welcome from UT! I would second talking to @james@tech12volts, they have a speaker upgrade kit for the Tundra's, as well as subs and boxes.

Just upgraded my HU to a kenwood excelon dnx997xr. All I can say is the change in sound quality is amazing. From what others have posted the factory head unit is the weak link. I can definitely attest to that after just changing out the HU. May upgrade speakers soon, but the new HU was worth every penny.

    Welcome from Oregon!

similar to others, here is what I did:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/2018-sr5-non-jbl-audio-upgrade.65640/

Short version: for $1300 or less you should be able to install a 5 channel amp, a boxed sub, and new door speakers and tweeters, along with good sound dampening material. I would estimate 1-4 days for the full install, depending on ones familiarity with this type of installation, and your work/life schedule.

I broke my install into two phases to keep peace in my life; power, amp, sub ($850) and new speakers ($250-ish on a group buy) along with Dynamat ($150) which got installed during both phases. Phase 3 will be to replace the HU for further improvement and to add Apple CarPlay.

I have to recommend James at tech12volts. His individualized customer service is second to none. Chances are good that I could have shaved cost if I had purchased everything through James.

    Good luck!

I have the JBL and it still sucks so there's that. I'm on the lookout for a budget audio build with carplay.

I went the factory head unit route with new amp / speakers / sub route initially. Made a decent improvement, but didn’t exactly wow me.

Then replaced the head unit (Pioneer 8600NXT). The sound quality and overall improvement was amazing.

Simply put, the factory head unit produces a junk source signal. Better source signal will make everything downstream come alive.
