Getting a Viper alarm system to work with the Tundra?

Hello everyone. I have a 2017 CM Platinum and was surprised that the top end model didn't have a remote start already. Anyways, I went to have an Viper 5806 alarm system installed with the remote start and they had it at their shop for three hours and then called me and said that the remote start has issues, that they called BEI which is the owner of Viper, Clifford, and other alarm system companies and was told that they didn't have the software figured out and that it might work, it might not work, that they had to program it as a 15 Tacoma to set it up then once configured set it up as a 11 Camry and that even then it might work and might not. Anyone have this problem and if so did you find a fix?

My 2017 SR5 CM came with remote start, mind you it turns off when you unlock the truck, which is annoying.
Sorry that I can’t answer your question.

I am going to go with they don't know what they are doing. My dealership is an Automate dealer. Automate uses the same brains as Viper. I install these on Tundra's all the time. Its the same software(TL5) that has been used since Toyota changed to the 80 bit G-key. What are the issues you are having? I have been doing 12v for over 20yrs. I am not sure where you are located, but if you are near by I would gladly help you.

I have viper as well without issue. Be sure to use a viper installer.

Look under your dash and see if its a wiring nightmare. If it is get your money back and go to a reputable installer

Same thing happened to me at Best Buy. Let them try it twice and they couldnt ever get it to work. Finally said to hell with it and got my money back. Still really wish I had remote start...

They were a viper certified installer. I am in Salem Oregon. My CM came with the basic alarm system from Toyota. I was thinking last night of contacting my dealership and upgrading to the VIP Alarm system from Toyota and do the remote start through the dealership as well. It would cost a little more but then be warrantied through Toyota. What are your thoughts on that? I also did get my money back from the viper installers btw. They were really apologetic over it all. Now I wonder if they even attempted it, perhaps it was a wiring nightmare under there and they said screw it. Who knows. I just want the truck better protected before I take my next road trip that's coming up.

Actually I have an addition question. I know Viper was bought by Clifford, and Clifford was bought by NEI, I know the alarms are similar. Is one better than the other?

yep bank account is running low from it..
    Wrong ...

It's all owned by direct electronic inc. or dei. It has been that way for YEARS.. they are a world leader.

To me your installer has no idea what they are doing. Just saying.

I meant DEI, not NEI. My secondary question still remains, is Clifford and Viper the same or is one better than the other?

They are the same. Part numbers are only off by a letter. I requested a viper but my mechanic was able to get me a Clifford for cheaper & the part numbers only differed by a letter. They also looked identical & all owned by dei so they most likely use interchangeable parts. My installer also had issues with mine & their tech support forwarded install instructions for a 4Runner. The 4Runner install worked & ended up discovering a defective brain in the process. Brain was replaced & Works great now but it was a painful process.

Good luck with this. I am interested in the remote start for my 2011. I'm in Beaverton and would be interested in knowing which direction you go.

I am going to check on the VIP Alarm upgrade via the dealership Monday and I am going to go over to cartoys in Salem as well. I will let you know what I find. Cartoys deals with Clifford mostly. I might go with the clifford option as opposed to the toyota option being I want a sensor for my tonneau cover and I seem to recall toyota won't or can't do that. Either ways....stay tuned.

Had mine installed with smart start as well. Works perfect. I think you need to try another installer. Definitely get your money back.

I had a Viper remote start / alarm installed on my TRD Pro 3 weeks ago and it works perfectly. They did take a LONG time to install but it works great! Took mine to a certified Viper Installer, I know you said you did too but try a different place.

Just because they are a certified Viper installer does not mean they know what they are doing. The training classes only cover the basics. The install is based on the individual. I guarantee it's not done properly. Tundras are not the most difficult to do.

There is a smaller national dealer called Toyota you can try. I hear they offer remote start for Tundras and it works seamlessly....

If you read one of my earlier posts, you will see that I did check with them yesterday. Unfortunately they don't have an option to add a sensor for my tonneau cover. Yes I realize your comment was sarcasm. 8)

Except that Toyota's remote start is horrible. You start it and when you open the door to get in, kills it.

I have a 2014 CM with a dealer-installed Viper Model 7756v with the 2-way remote. I got the truck in 2015 & everything worked perfectly. Around the tail end of this past winter my remote start quit working. The truck's computer thinks it's running & wont let you manually start the vehicle until you kill the remote start with the remote. Recently, I've been getting feedback on the remote stating that the trunk is open when I try to arm the system. This is all in addition to the frickin door lock actuators failing sequentially. Anyone have any suggestions?

Viper has a lifetime warranty on the unit and your dealer should have a warranty for the installation..

Anyone with a viper retain the functionality of opening the driver door with 1 click and all doors with 2 clicks?

If all your looking for is a remote start, I recommend the Fortin Evo One with the T harness. Seller on fleabay will flash it to your vehicle and install isn't to difficult, and you keep your factory fob.

It only has the range of the factory remote. A 100ft or so.

Yeah, thats true, but after the range my last vehicle had, I think approximately 100 feet is incredible. I damn near had to be on top of my last car to get it arm/disarm.

Update. I checked with the dealership for the upgraded alarm systems from Toyota, they won't install a sensor for the tonneau cover because that's a modification much to the irritation of the accessories manager. The service department won't do it period even though the mag switch they use for the hood would be just as fine for the tonneau. I even asked if they skipped the hood switch and place it for the tonneau and they were like I was asking them to go stand in front of a train or something. So I will get a viper installed somewhere, I can go to what I have determined is a best recommended shop here in Salem while a bit on the high price side are basically considered the gold standard or when I take a trip back to the CA next month I will go to the place that put in my last few alarm systems. I appreciate most everyone ones suggestions. You all are the best.
