Hello I’m new to this forum. 2012 2wd 5.7. Getting re-geared. I don’t go on dirt but might do a little pre-running in the future. 6” lift with 35”x12.50x20. Mainly heya and a lot of city driving. should I get 4.88 or 5.29. My buddy owns a gear shop and he recommended 5.29. Not sure what to do.

If you do a search you’ll find a lot of threads in this. Basically, if you’ll stay at 35’s 4.88 should be fine. If you’ll 37’s you’ll want 5.29. From all I’ve read, the divide is right between 35 and 37....

But it also depends a on how you’ll use your truck... towing, what tires, even offset. Definitely worth a search to learn more before you commit.

Have them put a locker in there while you’re at it. If you’re going to be in the dirt, you at least want both back wheels fully locked since you’re not 4 x 4.

5.29s, rpm is at 2650 @ 80mph in 6th gear and the truck will make massive amounts of torque and just be idling most of the time. I get the same mpg or better with 5.29s compared to stock, even though the engine is spinning 25% faster. Lots of threads on gearing though in the Performance & Tuning section, but imo there is zero loss with 5.29s unless you want to go 130mph, otherwise you get more torque, same mpg, and the engine doesn't have to work as hard.

    I’m also on 6” and 35s. I have 5.29s - wouldn’t change anything.

I have had 5.29s since early 2020. For over a year I was on 295/70/18s (34.3x11.5). I went 529 over 488 because I tow a travel trailer and I never wanted that "what if". My plan was to only move up to 35s, but ended up moving up to 37s. I was very happy with the trucks performance on 34s with the 529 and even on 37s.
    34s with stock gears - 13.4MPG
    34s with 529s - 12.8-13.0MPG
    37s with 529 - 12.5-12.8MPG

My towing MPG is +/- 0.3mgp across all 3 variations 7.7-8.0
The engine rpms are a little higher but the engine load is less
