Who should I use in the Portland/ Vancouver area for my ring and pinion swap.? I can't let just anyone work on my baby! I would like someone experienced with Toyota and lockers.

Woody's in St. Johns area is probably the best option.

I had Gresham 4x4 install my lift and they said that they can do a gear swap as well. I was told that they have one guy there that does them. Honestly, I would feel more comfortable with a shop that only deals with drivetrains but it does not look like there are any around.

    That's the place.

Friend has been using them for years for his race truck (Toyota) and told me about them.

Well, it looks like I will be the guinea pig for this one. I am having Woody's quote me Yukon 4.88's, and Auburn Pro LSD, and an Eaton E-locker for the front.

I’ve not used him, but my buddy has used and recommends Dan’s Gears in Sherwood. One man show, a little salty, only works on gears. May be worth a call to see if he does Tundra’s. 503-692-1547.

Dan's is out of business. I talked to R&P FWD in Oregon City and he suggested Holbrook Specialties in Gladstone. I texted him so now we wait for a date.

I just found out that the Auburn LSD is backordered and most likely discontinued. So it looks like I will be going with the Powertrax unit.

I was leaning tword the Powertrax anyway. Any luck on pricing? I need to get this done sooner rather than later. I have an Antelope hunt in August. It would be nice to have some gears broke in by then.

So I finally have all of the gear except for the front install kit that was supposed to be instock, it wasn't. After many calls and searches I found a kit through Motiv Gear. In another week My truck should be at the shop for the install.

If you are thinking about regearing, start looking for the parts. The hardest end for parts is the front end.

I received the Motiv rings and pinions, Yukon rear install kit, and Powertrax through Summit and the E-Locker through Justdifferentials. I ordered the front Motiv install kit from Jaws gear and axle.

I also need to figure out where I am going to mount the E-Locker switch. The limited has every location filled up.

So I just got my truck back from the 4.88 swap and it is very loud. They wanted to try a different pattern but I told them that I would break the gears in to see if it gets quieter. The guy that did the gears has been doing them for 25 years.

I've done two swaps with the last being 4.56 gears in my Jeep, and neither were louder than stock. Is this something typical for Tundra's?

Easier to try a new pattern before they are broken in. Patterns are said to become useless on worn gears. Take it back. You paid the big bucks for the right setup, give them an opportunity to get it right.

They wanted to pull the rear back out today but we all agreed that the might quiet down after break in. They also said that they don't have a problem getting a pattern after they are broke in.

Yeah I'm interested to see as well. They have been doing gears for so long that if they can't get them quieter than they will call Motiv.

After the gears are installed, they are painted with a paste so that they can see where the contact is. There have been posts on here about gears with a near perfect pattern having noise. Most of the time it’s when coasting. Mine is both coasting and driving.

Oh the contact pattern...The installer should have done this already?
How much noise are we talking about?

The shop said that the pattern was perfect. The noise sounds like you are riding on an airport shuttle bus. Noise when on the throttle and also when coasting. It is not terribly loud but loud enough to be annoying. If it does not go away, then they will pull the pumpkin in two weeks to try another pattern.

I really did not want them pulling it again on a Friday with 100 degree heat as he was already frustrated about the noise. If they can’t get rid of the noise then I will be getting another gear set. It appears that these 10.5” rears can be a bitch sometimes.

Yeah I several people have posted about noise. Not sure if brand has anything to do with it? What brand did you go with? I went with Nitro, but they have been on back order. Waiting!
