    Good morning all,

I have this problem, started yesterday. While trying to fill up before I drive 225 home. Can’t fill up, and went to 3 different stations. I finally jammed it in and held it tight and it worked for a few seconds and then gas poured back out. Can’t see any blockage. I saw another post but it was May 2018 and not sure I’ll get a response. Have a 2016 Platinum, scheduled service tomorrow since no appointments open today and missing 2 days of work. But since I see others have had this happen, looking for an answer or what your outcome was. Thanks for any help.

Maybe the vent tube is kinked? Will it fill if you pull the handle on the gas nozzle partially?

Checked the vent tube, filler tube this morning, both look okay and no matter how little or tightly I pull he handle it shuts off in 1-2 seconds. Thanks.

Sounds like you’ll just have to let the dealer sort it out.

Exactly what I’m thinking. I’ll wait and see if the other poster from last year responds, I’ll update once it’s handled. Thanks brother, appreciate the response.

Having the same issue with my 2016 platinum. Dealership diagnosed to replace charcoal filter for evap system. Beyond warranty (of course). They told me $1600 and they would pay half. Got the truck back couple days ago and went straight to the gas station. Same problem. WTF. Bringing it back to dealer next week. Any updates from you?

There was a similar thread a while back on this forum or another Tundra forum I read. In that case it turned out that there is an anti-backflow valve (some sort of flapper I think) in the gas tank and it was stuck. The bottom line is that the gas tank had to be replaced.

My '16 developed this problem as did @TRON. The problem both of us had was a stuck roll over/ inertia valve. My local dealer quoted me $1,200 for a new tank and said it isn't a repairable item. I hate my local dealer, but that's another story. Honestly it should fall under warranty. My solution was to drop the tank and poke the valve with a screw driver. It worked and opened the valve. But, I didn't wanna have the issue again so I "reworked" the valve into a non-operational status.

How many gallons of gas short of full when you had this problem?

The vent may be kinked or blocked. If you know someone with a scope look down the fill tube. All the best..

Sounds like a classic backflow/rollover valve issue.

I had roughly half a tank when I discovered the valve was stuck in the closed position.

One more reason for me to HATE my local dealer. $200 to stick that scope down there and tell me they couldn't see anything, it was too short and, because I've modified my truck, no warranty.

What modifications do you have? Thee is a law that puts the burden of proof on them to prove your mods caused the issue. So if you have new suspension, they can’t deny a claim on the gas tank.

I'm familiar with Magnuson Moss but they can, and do, make it such a PITA that it's not worth it to me to fight 'em and have the truck down for an extended period. Couple hours work and I'll never have the problem again.

So now that you’ve worked on it and figured out the problem, do you think it would be possible to fix that issue with a longer borescope? Maybe not having to remove the tank? Maybe be able to jab that flap open with the end of the scope. Just curious

Possible? Yes. But it would require a great deal of luck too. There are a lot of bends to negotiate and a bulls eye anti siphon ring just above the valve. A common #2 flat screwdriver wont fit past the bulls eye, so it's got to be something very small that will pass through all the required bends w/o snagging, needs to be greater than 3' in length, fit through the bulls eye and yet be rigid enough to pop open the valve. I also tried compressed air w/o success.

I didn't ask my question Correctly.

was wondering for example if you have a 38 gallon tank with this problem then how much has can you put in there? 30 gal?
    Thanks

Yeah, I have the 38. I was able to fill it, a teaspoon at a time. From 1/4 tank to full took roughly half an hour. Luckily, coming home from T2S in Sedona, all the Bastrds would help out, taking turns pumping the gas. All the guys now, if they didn't already, sport a kung fu grip. LOL
I ran the tank down to about 3 gal. before dropping it to repair.

Is this problem covered under 3 years or 5 years warranty? Since its not a powertrain, I'm thinking maybe 3?

I don’t know if anyone getting a standard Toyota warrantee with 3 years. Mine was 2 on anything other than drivetrain.

Came here to say I had this issue. 87k miles. Rode it out for a month with 30 min gas fills. Problem has since gone away. So maybe try riding it out for a bit before biting the bullet

Old ass thread but I think it has something to do with an anti-rollover valve or something to that effect.

I've had this before and the fix was replacing the evaporative emissions charcoal cannister and purge valve. Was told that topping tank to the very top after the gas pump shuts off causes fuel to get into the cannister which eventually deteriorates it.
