My garage faces west and gets pretty uncomfortably hot in the Summer after 2pm. I've seen these foam boards that you stick on the door to insulate, has anybody used those and if so did it block any heat?

I'm pretty skeptical but if it works its worth a try. Here is what I'm looking at.
    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Cellofo...es-Garage-Door-Insulation-Kit-8-pcs/203630159

I have a single car garage and there are 2 small vents in the corner by the door, they lead to a covered carport so not a lot of heat comes through them. My garage door does have windows and while I can put foam around them I don't want to block them. I'm not too concerned about them because placing my hand on them they are cool, where the metal of the door gets very hot. I will be installing a decent fan soon too, just not sure where yet.

I insulated mine with regular old blue foam board. Just cut it to fit. I think it made a difference but I am not sure how much. I did it years ago.

I would do it again if I ever had an uninsulated door.

It does increase the weight of the door.

You might want to consider changing the paint to a lighter color possibly white.

My garage door must remain black.

Just kidding, it is white. I would paint it black but HOA won't let me.
Yeah I considered weight. The stuff I am looking at is roughly one pound per panel (20x54") so I am only looking at around 6.5 lbs added. I don't think that will hurt but if it does I can recalibrate the opener and add reinforcement to the framing it is on.

I've been thinking of the same but I would use this insulation below and some liquid nails to bond it to the garage door. It has a good R-value for 1" thick. I've used this stuff before and it is really dense. You can paint it too.

Is that XPS or a poly iso board?

I don’t remember which foam panels I used, but it was one of the higher R value ones at HD. It made a big difference for me here in AZ, but the rollers/brackets/braces/etc will still transfer heat. It’s definitely a noticeable improvement though.

You should get your springs adjusted with the mentioned weight difference, and also remember that while you’re keeping heat out, you’ll also trap heat in from parking your hot vehicle in the closed garage.

This is basically what I used. 1” thick and I did two layers. I had it lying around from another project.

    If u use this with 2 inch foam it’s a R13, that’s same R value as a 2x4 wallsF5A44E35-1C8E-4AA9-8129-81C5A66DC226.jpg

    Here’s 3 thoughts;
    1) The foam insulation will help a lot.
    2) The weight of only 6 or seven lbs may require adjustment of your spring or springs, not just the opener
    3) the glass feels cool because it is clear, the heat is where the sunlight is hitting INSIDE the garage

I did the same a few years ago, although my door faces east.
I think it helped, it sure didn't hurt..

I bought 4X8 sheets and cut them myself.
Stuck them on with liquid nails I think..
    Used this stuff, 1/2".

This is what I used. Made one hell of a difference not only in the garage, but the FROG above it as well.

Good point for most. The only car I will park in here is a weekend toy so that won't be an issue.

I am considering using some fancy clear or mirror tint that holds the heat out, or if I light this garage up with LED I may just block the windows all together.

This is the reason why I installed insulated doors right from the beginning. Mine is facing the east, and the space around the garage is quite open, so it gets really hot inside if the door is open.
These Garage Doors help to keep the temperature inside the garage significantly lower than outside, and I like that a lot. The doors also have windows because I like it when it’s not that dark and gloomy inside. Glad I chose these doors because they are way better than plastic ones, and they still look good after two years of usage. If you even have a choice between plastic garage doors and wooden ones, choose the wooden ones.
