Full Interior Swap 2nd Gen (07-13) to 3rd Gen (2014+) Dash, Cluster, Console, Seats, ect.

Hey everyone, as some one you know I recently took on the task of swapping a full 2014+ interior into my 2007 RCSB TRD Pro Tundra project. (A link to my full build thread if you want to see more on my project. https://www.tundras.com/threads/the...014-conversion-front-clip-interior-bed.90281/ )

I had read multiple discussions on swapping interior pieces, seats, ect. all over Tundra forums but never got any clear answers on if it was possible or how hard it would be.

I had always had the thought it could be done, so I just kind of went for it. I have basically completed my swap and am creating this thread to try to share knowledge with everyone. I have gotten ALOT of questions recently and thought if we had a thread dedicated to this it would help all of us.

This is directed at anyone with a 2nd Gen 2007-2013 Tundra who wants to update part or all of their interior to the 2014+ style.

Overall the most difficult part of the swap by far is the wiring and electrical. I spent a large amount of time reading wiring diagrams, build tables labeling wire color/function, and repining connectors. I think having a basic knowledge of automotive electrical systems is important before attempting this.

The best part is that Toyota really did not change a lot as far as mounting locations, procedures during the 2014 Tundra update. It seems for the most part they left the cab very similar. Almost everything was a direct bolt in. In a few small areas a bolt location didn't line up exactly but nothing is held together with duct tape or self tapping screws.

*Note that in August of 2017 Toyota updated lot of electrical components as the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system was added for the 2018 Tundra. This is when things like Pre Collison Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Auto Headlights, Radar Cruise Control ect. were added. I would split the 3rd Gen into two sections, the (2014-2017) pre Safety Sense, and the (2018-2021) with Safety Sense.

I'm interested in a cable for a 2013 Sequoia to a newer (2018?) gauge cluster. I had a 2017 86 that I was able to use a 2019 cluster in via techstream (it had the security association need) so that's not an issue for me.

Nice. Curious where you sourced all the parts from. Tundra's are still too valuable to be at the wreckers here.

 

I used Techstream to check the operation of my cluster but I didn't need it for the security association part.

I have had a few guys ask about Sequoias and Sequoia Clusters. I think it should be very similar to the Tundra and do able for the most part.

Need to verify that the 2014-2017 Sequoia Cluster will fit in the 2007-2013 Tundra/Sequoia Dash with a minor trim change. I think it will.

The 18+ sequoia dash between the driver door and right driver vent is the same shape with an opening for the gauges. At worst there are 1/2 circular "port holes" that might need to be cut/trimmed. The part is about 150 so that's doable.

I replaced my 2010 SR5 CrewMax cluster with a Limited Optiron so had the original SR5 cluster, it connects right up & works in my '13 Sequoia Limited fwiw.

Instrument Cluster

The Tundra has two different styles. The 2014-2017 Cluster and the 2018+ Cluster. As I mentioned before anything 2018+ will have all the Toyota Safety Sense systems incorporated.

2014-2017


This is the style of cluster in my truck currently. The biggest downfall is that these do not have a digital speedometer in the display. I think the display will show MPG info Avg. and instant, Distance until empty, and Avg. Speed.

This cluster has one 40 pin connection (J28) in the back to run everything. If you read here, the first two post explain what I did to make it work. I have no errors or warning lights on my dash and this functions just as it would if it came from the Toyota factory with this cluster.

2018+


This 2018+ style cluster has many more features than the other. HOWEVER when Toyota added the Safety Sense systems in 2018, they vastly expanded on the CAN (Communication Area Network) system. The new radar sensor, front facing camera, lane departure alerts all run on this new CAN network. Toyota also added a Network Gateway that acts as an information hub inside the CAN network.

I purchased a 2018+ cluster and wired it into my truck. The CAN network delivers signals from the ECU to the Cluster. These include, Engine RPM, Engine Temp, Oil Pressure, and others. The problem is that the new CAN signals on the 2018 network are not the same as the 2007-2017 trucks. The 2018 cluster would not recognize the Engine RPM, Engine Temp, Coolant Temp signals being sent from the 2007 ECU. On top of that I got a significant amount of error messages because the cluster could not see the Safety Sense modules. It was looking for the radar sensor, front camera ect.

IF a 2018+ cluster is ever going to work in a 2017 or older truck it will take extensive work in converting the older CAN signals into a newer format the cluster can see and also a spoof/fool the cluster into thinking all the safety sense modules are present and operating correctly so you will not get any errors.

I don't know if I will be able to crack this one day but I certainty want to try again soon. For now my 2018 Tundra cluster sits on the shelf because it wont communicate properly with my 2007 truck.

 

That is a bummer but I'm pretty sure based on what you have accomplished that you are 100% right which means it's a 2017 and older cluster for now.

I'd happily buy a cable from you whenever you are willing to sell me one.

What are your thoughts on if the interior swap will work on a Sequoia? Aren't the new Sequoias and last gen Tundras interior pretty much the same?

From what I can see visually, the Sequoia didn't get the update the Tundra did in 2014. The 2018 Sequoias most likely got the Toyota Safety Sense update with a new steering wheel, cluster ect.
It seems the 2007-2013 Tundra and 2007-2017 Sequoia is basically the same. I have not looked at any Sequoia wiring diagrams however.

Are you saying you want a 2014+ Tundra Dash in a Sequoia? I think it could be done and would be very similar to my 2007 Tundra swap.

 

Do any of the steering wheel controls work? Did you happen to notice if the airbag itself, without the cover, is the same for '07 and '15+?

Yes all the steering wheel controls work. To make this happen I had to add several wires to the connector behind the clock spring in the steering column. Stock my truck was only wired for the cruise control. I added wiring to control the radio, phone, instrument cluster ect. from the steering wheel.

My steering wheel is a 2018 because I had planned on using the 2018+ cluster. for now it is wired into a 2015 cluster however and works just fine.

I haven’t looked in a while but the 07 Airbag is a different shape and I am 99% sure under the cover it is a completely different airbag/mount.

I will verify in a few days as I have purchased a newer airbag that should be here soon. I can take a photo or two comparing both.

 

Sequoia is mostly the same as '13 Tundra. in '15 or 16, they got the new steering wheel, 18 they got their own really cool gauge cluster.

My 2010 Tundra gauge cluster plugs right in.

 

That’s an interesting thought. I wonder if the Seqouia 15-16 dash would be plug n play into ours

 

The dimensions are the same, above '18 the cluster area changes but appear like it would fit (I wanted to get an 18+ cluster so looked into it).

I looked at a '20 at the dealer and am sure the dash will fit (can't say the clips are the same) I doubt they would appreciate it if I tried to disassemble their new truck.

 

The 2007-2013 Tundra and the 2014-2017 Tundra use the same 40 pin connector into the back of the cluster.

The 2018+ Cluster has the 40 pin but an additional 12 pin (I think). These clusters have a lot more info coming into them from the Toyota Safety Sense. As I mentioned before I put a 2018+ cluster on my 07 Tundra and got no signals from an of them ECUs, No rpm, no oil pressure , no water temp ect. The CAN signals are all different.

It’s my thought the 2007-2017 Sequoia Cluster is the same style/look. If so it’s mush easier to just put an 07-13 Sequoia cluster in your 2nd Gen Tundra

I don’t see what the dash would be that different between the older Sequoias and Tundras.

 

I just bet 91 bucks on this 15-17 cluster.



I lived in Mexico for 5 years so the KPH being predominant is meaningless to me.

 

Look at the part number. Some are for 26 gal tanks or 38 gal tanks. Some include parking assist and sonar some don’t. Also so are flex fuel only I believe

It's listed as 83800-0CM60-B in the auction & of course not on the list. I knew I was gambling, it's only 91 bucks so if nothing else I'll be able to share the data with the forum to avoid that PN if it fails.

 

A/C Controls/ HVAC System

I believe all 2007-2013 Tundra have this Dual Zone AC control panel. Some of the nicer trims has the Digital Auto AC controller and not this manual one. These have a temp control for the Drivers Side and a separate control for the Passenger side. You can also Sync the Pass side to duplicate the driver setting.





The 2014-2017 AC Cluster has a Manual AC Control Panel as well as a Digital Auto AC Control Panel. Both shown here.




I first swapped in the Manual AC controls into my truck but quickly found out these are for a single zone (not dual zone) AC system. This means as I adjust the temp from cold to hot or vice versa it only changes on the drivers side of the truck. I had no control of the temp on the passenger side. This is because the dual zone trucks have separate blend doors in the HVAC box under the dash. The left half door is controlled by the driver side servo motor while the right half of the door is controlled by the passenger side servo motor. The single zone trucks have one single door that is controlled completely by the driver side servo motor. So the Manual AC controls do not know how/will never send signals to the passenger side servo motor therefore it will never move.

If you want to swap in the 2014+ Manual AC controls, you should consider changing the entire HVAC box under the dash as well to one with the single zone blend door. This is the best solution to being able to control the air temp.

I am in the process of switching to the digital Auto AC control because it does support the dual zone and will send signals to both driver and passenger servo motors/blend doors. Note if you are adding Auto AC to a truck that was/is manual AC you will need to add some other sensors ect. There is a write somewhere on the forums explaining the process.

I think now would be a good time to mention the AC Amplifier (AC ECU). This is a small black box under the dash/glovebox area that controls the whole AC system. Each AC control panel has an AC amp that works with it. For example if you want a 2014 Manual AC controls you have to have a 2014 Manual AC Amplifier ect. I will work on getting part numbers for all of them but with out the right AC amp the control panel will not work properly.

For the wiring I just created a similar style plug and play cross over harness. The 2007-2013 Tundra has a 16 pin connector while the newer 2014-2017 Tundra uses an 8 pin connecter to feed the AC Control panel. The process was pretty straight forward and simple. You will need to move wire from the Hazard control switch on the old trucks down to the AC control panel as that is now where the Hazard button is.

Sequoia got the steering wheel in 2014, seems like that's all it got then.

My 15+ cluster is out for delivery, we'll know tonight or tomorrow if it connects/works in my 13 Sequoia.

Cluster is here, lens is a mess, will replace if I can use it. It's an oven here so it'll be the morning before I try to install.

 

I went out there, almost burst into flames & got it in.

Connect yes, someplace to bolt? NO. Communication, NO.

The lock icon lights up & directionals/hazards flash. Nothing else.

 

Can you give details on the steering wheel control wiring, please? I ordered a '18 Tacoma steering wheel which should be the same as the Tundra. My '07 is only wired for cruise control as well. I will have to order an airbag.

 

I haven't looked at mine with the plexi off. I wonder if it's possible to remove the plexi AND trim off the extra black trim around the gauges if I decided to do a "surface mount" of the cluster behind a flat piece of plexi?
