Fuel Gauge Issue - not seen before. Those of you that have had a fuel gauge issue. Is this similar. Pulled into the driveway last night. Had 3/4 tank of gas. Got In the truck this afternoon and the gauge showed completely full. Drive a while. Parked the truck. Started up and again showed full. No chance it can be the case. I have almost 3000 miles on the truck. Have not seen this issue at all Until today. Thoughts

Sounds like a bad fuel sending unit. I would just take it to the dealer.

Yep. That is the plan I have heard others with similar problems. Wondered what they found out.

I had this happen to me only twice. Both times it was at almost 3/4 on the gauge and it goes back to full. Mileage Distance to empty goes up too. Only the first And second tank tho it happened. Now on my 6th tank and haven’t seen it happen again. I usually drive my tundra till it’s almost touching the E and fill up the tank to full.

Happened to me too, at 3/4 full. That being said I think it went to 3/4 way too fast so it probably was much closer to full. Now going down at a reasonable pace. Odd.

My only issue with the fuel gauge is that it goes down too quickly. My 34's and lift might have something to do with that though. haha.

Yeah I’m having that issue on mine. Do any of you have the larger 32g tank? Reason I ask is when I have full tank of gas the miles left don’t add up to what it should be based of avg MPG which I know isn’t always correct but I’m talking over 100 miles difference. Then when it gets right below 3/4 it will reset back to full and show more miles to empty. Only had it happen once so far but only 500 miles into it.

Someone who is an engineer might be able to explain better...but I'm pretty sure the DTE miles is a dynamic calculation. I'm also 95% positive it's NOT calculated against the full 32 gallons since Toyota doesn't design their fuel system to run to full empty. "Empty" doesn't mean truly empty. I really wish Toyota wouldn't advertise a 32 gallon tank because it causes so much confusion.

Keep in mind I'm running 34" tires with a 2" lift, so my results will vary.

Before the lift & tires, my DTE would be between 550 and 570 at each fill up. It remained that way for about 2 weeks after the lift...even though I knew I wasn't getting anywhere close to 550 miles out of each tank. After I reset my MPG history, my DTE miles now show around 450 at each fill up. I think when you clear the system, it resets the DTE calculation too...but I might be wrong.

I have also noticed that it seems to change the consumption, especially early after a reset. What I mean by that is when I track 1 mile traveled on GPS, it's actually closer to 1.2 or 1.3 miles on DTE. Then sometimes it'll slow down and 1 "GPS mile" will be more like .8 DTE miles. There's no decimal point on the DTE so I'm merely guessing based on length of time the number is on the screen. It did this before the lift & tires, but it's definitely more erratic now...but I'm sure it's the tires causing that.

my DTE is 450ish truck has no mods and has 500 miles on it. After I had the first fuel gauge issue it reset back when it hit 3/4 and gave back roughly 100 back to the total.

Appreciate the info and totally understand what you are saying. Got another issue also as I seem to have a leak behind the the handle (oh shit handle) inside the cabin on driver side, seems to be coming from behind it when it rains and not the windshield or door. Luckily not a huge issue yet but taking it to them to look at and the fuel gauge also.

Even with these problems still loving the truck and glad I got it.

Whoa. That sucks. Search the forum. There was another 22 owner who posted a video of water leaking out of his A-pillar grab handle. After much back & forth with his local dealer, they finally got Toyota Engineering involved, and it turned out it was a bad seal inside his moonroof. There's a "pan" that surrounds the moonroof to channel water and the seams of the pans had a QC issue. They replaced the dude's moonroof.

You didn't mention if you had the moonroof. If you do, maybe you've got the same issue?

for toyota, first year or not, it seems like these things heading more to shitboxes at the moment, rather than tundra's with toyota QDR,

come on toyota, I test drove, like it, but damn, my 2016 with75K miles is looking ok right now.

hahaha. Having owned several XJs over the years (I love them but even XJ fans refer to them as total shitboxes)...the 2022 Tundra is still lightyears from even flirting with shitbox territory.

    To each his own though.

ya, I get it, but Im talking in the toyota QDR world, the amount of different BS going on is staggering for toyota. if it was just one thing like the turbo, ok shit happens. but damn,

    window seals leaking
    rear window rattling
    turbo crap out
    camera/head unit failure
    rear diff leaks
    sunroof leaks
    engine stalling
    fuel gauge malfunction
    leather install looking like shit
    windshield leak noise
    misaligned panels

just off the top of my head while Im tracking things for my potential purchase.

Wow. Now that is odd. Wild. I wonder where you're getting water intrusion from above with no moonroof. Water only flows downward, following gravity and the path of least resistance. It's gotta be at the top of the windshield seal then. It's the only seal where two different surfaces meet that could allow for instrusion...unless you have a hole in your roof somewhere, which I doubt it would be that bad. Just speculating.

Really curious what your dealer has to say about it.

Has happened to mine every two weeks like clockwork since I got the truck. I reset the trip odometer at each fill up to make sure I have a reference point and I don't get screwed by running out of fuel. Up until the last time it happened, it was always when parked on an incline and upon restart fuel gauge went full. This last one happened while parked level.

Definitely a problem with the fuel sending unit. Already took it back to dealership and told needed to calibrate. I waited and then reset system by disconnecting battery. It was getting better until today. Have just 109 miles since filling up and shows just under full. The fuel Miles MPG screen shows 328 Miles left. The Toyota app shows 388 miles remaining. Mix MPG at 17 on the MPG screen. I figure should be about 435 remaining. Will be visiting the dealership again over this

I've had this problem since mid Dec. Took it to dealer twice already and they even dropped the tank to check the sending unit. Per technician, the sending unit was good. I finally had one of the techs come to my house so he can see what the exact problem is. He connected his laptop while I back out of my slope driveway to check the sending unit and it tested good. Computer showed sending unit moved as I backed out of my sloped driveway. When I got to the flat section, computer indicated sending unit moved back to the correct reading but the needle gauge on the dash DID NOT move back. He said its something to do w/ the logic in the dash. I was at the dealer today to follow up on it and was told Toyota is still investigating.

Just picked mine up a few days ago and happened on the first tank. Put about 120 miles on after driving it home (just over 3/4 tank left) and after a start up the needle jumped to full and DTE back up to 425 or so. Seems to be going down normally now but I know I should have full tank minus current mileage left… going to top it off and see if it happens again before taking it in.

Ok, had to rethink this and it appears I am wrong and gauge-MTE is correct. 32.5 Gallon tank less 6 gallon Toyota reserve puts miles at 426. At 16.2 MPG looking at miles driven plus MTE is accurate.

Ok, mine just did this. Still on my first tank of gas....I had 3/4 a tank when it happened. Anyway I can let the service department know without having to take the truck into the dealership? Just want it on record and hopefully engineers will see a pattern.

No they required me to take my truck in. They kept it 7 days. They called Toyota then did what they said. Then called Toyota and did what they said. Finally they replaced the sending unit but it stuck on full again hours after the “fix”
