6K will get him a 3rd Gen or an early early 4th Gen here in CO. The 3rd gen with low miles and well taken care of are between 6k and 8k. My youngest boy looked for about 5 months before we found his 98 Limited. When it was totaled by hail back in June we looked again for about a month before he gave up and settled on a Tacoma.
I have seen anywhere from 3k to 9k for 3rd Gen and 6k to 14k for 4th Gen
These are still highly desirable vehicles here in CO. You might have better options in your area.

Some of the guys on here were helping me with the replacement hunt. I can tell you there was a boat load of T4Rs down in TX. Tell your buddy to expand his search there.

Just anytime you look down south, make sure it is indeed a 4Runner(4wd) and not a 2Runner(RWD). 2wd trucks/suvs are pretty popular in my area, dealers stock them because they are a bit cheaper.

This part - "steel bumper that's welded on (addicted off-road)" scares me. If it's actually welded to the frame that's dumb.

^ truck number two, while more expensive it has half the mileage which I think is a big plus (granted both of these are the 3.4L motor which will run forever).
I also like that truck two is clean. engine bay and interior look good vs truck 1 which is just exterior pictures from on trails and such so no telling how long ago those were taken.

If it were me I'd go with the 99'

And inspect the frame meticulously for rust, it's about the only thing that will kill a T4R

Here's what you want for a hardcore, fuel efficient desert explorer. 22rE. E for EFI! Runs perfect at any weird angle you might find yourself in. :eek2: Perfect for a rockcrawler build! No rust. They make great DDs too. Even has a factory tach and OG SR-5 wheels! I'd jump on it!

Edit: I've got ~235K on my '88 so 208 or whatever he has is way low for a 31yr. old vehicle.

If it runs like a new truck and drives great, that is an absolute steal IMO. LA area, so no rust. Yes it looks a bit "worn" but not worn out IMO. Looks like its never been hacked up, suspension looks stock. 1st gen 4Runners are my favorite 4 Runner, well maybe them and a nicely done 3rd gen truck.

^Exactly! It's a little worn, mostly cosmetic, but definitely not worn out. No rust. Not hacked up. All original SR-5 with the optional gauge pkg. Gray interior, most red 1Gs have the ugly brown interior. Sunroof option. This is the perfect candidate for a restoration or a full-blown, SAS'd 'crawler. Can't believe it's still there. Probably cause it's way out in outer BFE. :eek2:

I have a 98 Runner that i use as my daily. Picked it up for $4400 with right at 245k miles. Spent about 2 grand more to get it up to par and i love it!

No way I could justify paying good money for a "2Runner" as I call it. $3200 for 300k miles and no 4wd seems like a rip off IMO.

oh yeah, the price is too much. I wouldn't pay that much either but I like that style.
