so we have decided that we want to close up this room and get rid of these stupid doors. What I have is a 60x80 opening and I’m curios as to what do I need to do here. Do I make a brand new frame or remove door and just make top and bottom for the joist to go in to? Hopefully you guys understand my idea lol the only problem I see is that the frame is about 5 1/2 wide around the door now and obviously we would use 2x4

Excuse the mess of toys everywhere. Had company over and they left with out picking up grrrr

Is it big enough for French doors? Might be easier to install than framing and sheet rock :notsure:

That idea has gone thru my head but that room has a single door already thru the hallway( weird design I know) so if we close this completely we gain all that room inside the room to hang stuff or add things against the wall.

Oh I see. I didn’t know their was another door already. If your planning to close it off completely. I’m assuming your going to have to remove the frame. Then put the studs and drywall etc... at least to be flush with the rest of the wall. Plus texture and paint.

Remove the doors and trim, re frame.

Problem you may have may be how much does the new sheetrock joints blend in with your existing wall?

Other words you might see the patch, in which case you may want to plan on removing all the sheetrock on the wall and applying new sheetrock bed tape and texture and paint to make it all look seamless.

20190429_060630.jpg Easy. Remove doors and trim, couple two tree 2x4, sheet rock, tape, spackle, paint, trim. Pull up that tile and cut the carpet too.

I'm thinking from your post you are eliminating the closet? Mights as well rip out the rest of the closet so you have all the demo done. Or are you going to use that as a closet on the other side of that wall? Not sure what's there. Looks like a nice weekend project

That's what I thought at first with the bi-fold doors, but I believe the OP is saying that is a large pass-through door to another room, like from living room to unused catch-all formal dining room with another entry.

What you're proposing is a LOT of work to stop traffic into an unused room, and it is a permanent modification that may raise future buyer eyebrows. I would close those bi-fold doors (removing the Laker's goal is optional), and threaten anyone that passes through. If threats don't work then use 1" X 2" cleats, top, middle, and bottom to screw those bi-fold doors closed. The effect will be the same as 2 X 4s and wallboard, with no wallboard dust, painting, etc.

Edit: I missed that one side of your bi-fold door is MIA. It's still less work to replace and paint the bi-folds than demoing, framing, wallboarding, texturing (hard to match), and painting to fill the hole.

I'm confused on the wall width... Are you just talking about the framing width, that including the door trim? If you have 2x4 walls and half inch drywall, it's a 4.5 inch finished wall. Half inch thick trim on each side would make sense for your measurement but want to make sure I'm following correctly.

If that's the case, then you'd just pop off the door trim and framing, add a 2x4 as a bottom plate, then add 2x4 studs on 16 inch centers to fill in. Taping and mudding a flat wall to match can be a bit of a bitch, but if your framing is good and the new drywall lines up, it should be hardly noticable.

Put in book shelves. You won't have to worry about drywall and the next owner could revert to to doors quickly.

Yes it’s a bedroom/game room with these doors and then it has a regular door leading to another hall way. This rooms leads to my living room and u got it right I’m trying to eliminate ppl(kids) going thru here and taking out a bunch of toys to my living room. The other is is MIA as it came flying off this weekend as a lovely nephew kept playing with it and knocked it off the rails.

Sorry for confusing u. I’m no expert at these things or terms. The 60x80 is just on the inside of that framed area. Where doors are currently in. The white frame is 4.5 but I’m assuming it’s just a decorative piece maybe? Won’t find out until i tear it apart

If you want it to be invisible, hire someone. Drywall is a PITA and it takes some patience to get it right.

That’s what I’m thinking but sometimes it feels better to do the work and say you did it yourself at your own house.

I’m not worried about the framing. I’m more worried about the drywall and make the wall look like it’s one and not a patch job lol

Frame in, 16” on center (I know, overkill), install new drywall from top to bottom.

Actually hiring out a company isn’t that bad. I had a ceiling patch job on several locations in my last remodel and didn’t have the time. Cost like 220.00 and looked amazing.

Based on your explanation, revised thinking crossed my mind: If you close off that door to the game room permanently, and if you build a closet in the game room, then you have another bedroom. Another bedroom may be more desirable eventually than a game room for families with teenagers...with 1.7 kids, each kid has a bedroom plus you have a guest room.

    Hire a handyman.
