    Hey guys,

i plan on making a brick flower bed in my yard. .

To my understanding, below are the steps I will be taking.

    1) Dig trench and level
    2) pour in paver base and tamp
    3) this is where I run into some questions. Some sites state that I can just put sand on top of the paver base, some others call for cement, and some call for stone dust mixed with Portland cement. What is stone dust? Where do I find it? Which option would be best?
    4) lay bricks and fill in crevices using silica sand
    5) wet silica sand and let dry

Any input will be Greatly appreciated!!

Additionally, I will be filling the flower bed with mulch. Since the flower bed will be right up against my house should I put a barrier between the mulch and foundation?

"Since the flower bed will be right up against my house should I put a barrier between the mulch and foundation?"

We put a 12" wide rock bed along the house and separated the rock from the mulch with a metal divider. That helps the mulch from overflowing into the rock. It is nice cuz you can spray it with weed killer without much of an issue of getting it into the other plants. But from what I've always gathered, try not to put landscaping against your foundation. We added gutters to the house a few months back and so our drip line doesn't get beat up by dripping water from the roof. That being said, I had to run some corrugated pipe from a couple downspouts to outside the flower bed and underneath my irrigation lines. On that note, I'll echo what was said earlier, and suggest you get a drip irrigation system. I got ours from dripdepot.com I think. It was very user friends and easy to apply. Didn't take much effort aside from planning where everything went. I wish I could be more help on your concrete questions, but it looks like you'll be doing the right way by what you put as the steps.

A few years ago I removed half of the grass...I didn't do anything fancy, just dug about 8 or so inches down, layed 2" of sand then soil and planted agaves, succulents etc. Then I removed the rest of the grass and layed mulch. So far everything is growing nicely and I dont even need to water it often..old pic.

What are those funny looking tan colored things? We don't have those down here in Louisiana. Kinda remind me of concrete. :duh:

From what I can recall from the two summers I worked landscaping about 10 years ago:
    1. Dig trench and level
    2. Lay down road crush, level it and tamp it firmly
    2. Lay down a fairly thin layer of sand and tamp it lightly
    3. Lay your bricks, adjusting the sand as necessary to make them level
If it were a patio, you would then tamp the bricks but that's not really possible or necessary for the edge of a bed.

You can use either mulch or landscape fabric in the bed to keep weeds down. You shouldn't need both for weeds specifically but you may choose to use the fabric to keep the mulch off the foundation. I'm not aware of any issues with putting mulch up against the house but I'm certainly no expert.

Hi, you should really have stone against the house, about a foot or so, as this will discourage termite activity. Also less watering near your foundation is better!
