    Hey everyone,

I picked up my first Tundra from a Toyota dealer and they recommended a Platinum warranty.

    2017 Tundra SR5 TRD - 58k miles

The platinum warranty is 5yr/60k miles for $4,300. Am I better off saving that cash to fix any issues? It seems extremely high!

I'll put up some pictures soon but wanted to get this out of the way. I used the search function and wasn't able to locate answers on a used warranty.

    Thanks in advance!

Holy crap. That's an insane amount. Given that Tundras are statistically a hell of a lot less likely to encounter issues, YES, I'd absolutely save that cash. I think I paid like $900 for a 100K/6yr warranty (when my truck was @ 30K or so).

That’ll be two camps on this. Pro insurance, and against insurance.

If it’s a dealer certified used truck, I would consider taking it to a trusted certified mechanic for an inspection. I would ask to see the vehicle service history. If that was all fine, I’d pass on the additional insurance.

    My reasoning:

    -it’s a 2017 Tundra
-that is the most reliable truck sold in 2017
-by 2017, the platform for drivetrain and body were ironed out, and only refinements on the platform were added. (No untested crap to break)

If you were buying a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge, I would say “get a warranty”. But not a Tundra, not for me.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!

Per the carfax report - Single owner and they had it serviced every 5k miles at Toyota. Traded it in for a new model.

Not certified, just pre-owned bought at a dealership.

That only strengthens my answer. I did buy a warranty, but literally the only reason I did was

    a) I had a sensor go out that would cost $900 if I had to fix it again (and it's the ONLY thing that's gone), and
    b) Mine is a 2020 (pandemic year). LOL

But if it's single owner, records kept, serviced every 5K years? Stick the $ in the bank against any potential issues.

With this said...I'll have to look his name up, but if you want a warranty, you can get it for one HELL of a lot less. The MOST expensive warranty (platinum, mind you) was like $2K or so for 10yr/100K.

Update - I think it was @AZTundra. Get in touch w/him. Couldn't be happier with the service and the process. :)

Big thing to add to my response: YOU need to be satisfied with your purchase and trust your instincts.

I wouldn’t feel safe if I didn’t put on my seatbelt when I drive, and it would be a constant source of anxiety.

If you are making this large purchase and will only feel comfortable if you get some warranty coverage, then consider that. You don’t want to commit to this and end up with doubts that nag at you.

And, great trucks and all, but shit does happen. You’ll have to do your own mental calculus and determine your own decision.

Check out a diff dealer for the warranty. I got a platinum for 1700.00 in 2018.

Just say no, for peace of mind you can put that 4300 in a savings account & use it to (not) fix the truck that most likely won't break.

I paid 900 for a similar deal when I bought my 2013 Sequoia, the only thing I have needed it for was the AC condenser fan & it was not covered. I wish I'd said no.

    Stupid high :rasta:...

Take a look at the following link tons of discussion and a good resource for extended warranty if you choose to go w/one, and you'll find very reasonable pricing

    Extended Warranty Purchase?

A couple of things to consider is that parts and labor are starting to get out of control in terms of pricing and the wait times to get parts and get your vehicle fixed. So one very nice benefit is that if you've paid for the warranty you're not left paying part prices 2 or 3 years from now, plus I believe w/the platinum warranty you may be entitled to a rental car during repair which motivates the dealer to get it done faster.

Also, some warranties allow transfer to new buyer or sell-back options if not used, which increases your market value and leverage during negotiations. Good luck!!!

If that truck is a flex fuel get the warranty. They have a contact that will sell you the same Toyota warranty for a grand. Your dealer is trying to slip it in dry.

Soo they want to you pay for a $4300 repair bill today and hope the truck never actually breaks down? If it does break they are very selective on what’s covered. Yea no thanks..

This is Toyota, that truck can go to 300k miles. At 58k you have used maybe 20% of its life. Hell one guy drove his 2007 to 1 million miles.

A fiend got sucked into one of those warranty’s. When his water pump failed the dealer jacked the bill sky high and said the warranty only covered half. Complete scam

The fact they offered you that worries me on what else they sold you. Let me guess 10% interest rate for 84 months and another $2-3k of “protection packages”

The power to walk away and not let the dealer take advantage of you is huge. If they feel they can price gouge you to hell they certainly will every time.

I got my extended warranty through the dealership contact AZTundra gave me and it was very reasonable. I am happy to share this referral but AFAIK it only applied to vehicles still within the 3yr/36,000mi.
