I don't think I've ever been so uncomfortably angry eating dinner at a restaurant in my entire life.

My 10yr old daughter had soccer practice in a shitty part of town (only option for her league that has turf and big lights in the winter). She wanted Pho after soccer, and I happily checked google for the highest rated around - for a dad/daughter dinner. I was hesitant about this part of town - there is a reason we live in the country and don’t come into town unless forced to. But she had to pee really bad, and was starving - we were 35 min south of home.
We sat down and ordered beef pho and pork noodles.
About 10 min later a couple walks in and starts talking politics.
They were at least 2 times the volume of every one else in the entire place. The man (in his 50’s, black) very loudly starts in with “I ain’t ever votin’ for a damn white man again” “I’m only votin’ for people of color” “we’re gitten’ robbed!” “I don’t care if it’s a lady of color, she’s gettin’ my vote!” “The white man can’t be trusted”.....On....and on...and on for 15 minutes.
His lady recognized that my daughter wasn’t impressed with his voice volume, and she was trying to quiet him down.
At this point, if I was solo I would’ve packed up and left. Either that or laid the fucker out flat (which wouldn’t have been hard). I didn’t want to give into his shit though, and didn’t want to upset my daugter. She wasn’t really paying attention to what he was saying, thankfully.
He was purposely trying to get a rise out of me, I believe.
I continued to laugh with my daughter, talking to her louder with the biggest smile on my face.
I’m almost positive it pissed him off even more.
Thankfully his food came and he started shoveling it in his mouth. I never heard a peep again until we left.

What type of fucking asshole would be so disrespectful while there is a child sitting 10 ft away?
“Shit” was used every other word, one of very few in his vocabulary.

    Anyway, pretty fucked up dinner.
I think I did the right thing given I was with my daughter.
My wife said I should’ve taken the food to go. But my daughter was starving.

As uncomfortable and crappy, I’d say good teaching moment/lesson for your daughter that not everyone’s opinions or behavior are always pleasant. We can overcome the nonsense! Anyways now you’re making me hungry for Pho...it’s the best

Yep, when we left I asked her if she had paid any attention to what the loud folks were saying - and she said no.
I was kind of hoping she did listen in, so I could teach her life lesson #1,529.

And yes, we really enjoy pho!
Whenever it’s just me and the daughter for dinner, we do Pho or seafood since the wife/son don’t care for either :D

Sorry for your dinner disruption, I've would've asked the manager to ask him to not disturb the patrons not make eye contact with the man to avoid any altercation, if that wouldn't work, ask for the food to go, have my kid eat on way home, sorry again

Yelp, that sucks and I feel your pain. There is alot I could add to this, but I enjoy this forum and don't feel like having a vacation from it. I'm just not sure I could have kept my southern country mouth shut.

I like using situations like this for training. You did the right thing, and would have been a conversation for the drive home.

High five for ignoring ignorance. It’s hard to go anywhere and feel comfortable doing it these days. Having your daughter with you and essentially only paying attention to her and not the mouth in the room was probably your best move. Shows you place her welfare high on your priority list. Kudos, and sorry about the shitty atmosphere while spending time with your little girl.

I wouldn’t sweat it. We can’t control the actions of everyone. I’m sure your daughter can understand that.

Next time, take her to tacos to prevent this from re-occurring. :D

We'd probably be saying the same thing.

OP: Sounds like this guy was trolling for confrontation.

I did a service call at a plant down in Aiken SC, walked in this guy's office and he had all this "W" bling on shelves and everywhere. This was just after 9/11, so just casually I said, "So you're a fan of "W"?"

He cut loose, he read off all the conspiracy crap that was out there, talked about the Skulls and whatever, ruling class this and "Bush Knew" junk.
Me being someone running service calls, basically a vendor to the guy, couldn't really engage. First time ever I met a real time Troll. The guy baited people by having that stuff out there letting them assume he's a Bush fan so he can rant.

When I left his office someone apologized, that they should have warned me not to mention that stuff. Gee thanks..

There’s no point in engaging some people. Honestly not much point in debating things like this with anyone. You’re never going to change someone’s mind over politics, religion, etc, so it’s better to just live and let live. As long as someone isn’t actually interfering with me, or causing real harm, I don’t really have a problem with how people decide to live their life.

A couple of years ago, I took my family to a comic book convention in Houston. When we were headed out, one of those Westboro type groups was outside ranting and raving about “fags” and such, telling everyone they were going to burn in Hell. My oldest daughter was really wanting to engage them and put them in their place, so to speak.
I just told her there just wasn’t any point. Most people weren’t going to take them seriously, so their message was all wasted effort. I told her there was nothing she could say that would affect their mentality at all, and they weren’t worth our time and energy. They had to live with themselves and their hate, no need for us to let it affect us.

She said “I know, but it would be fun.” She did have a point, but I told her to just keep walking.

Yeah you do - you hear it both ways in CT. Regardless of who it is speaking right left or down the middle.

For the most part I don’t go anywhere but to work and the gym where people may interact with each other. The world is too explosive to be bothered or to interact with people. You never know when an argument will ensue because people think their opinion is the only valid opinion.

Don’t talk - don’t make eye contact - just breath and move on

OP, you 100% did the right thing and should be commended for the example you set for the young, impressionable lady sitting across from you. As parents, we all know that kids often learn way more than we'd like them to from watching us handle our day-to-day lives. "Turning the other cheek" sounds easy enough, but it can be very hard to do when someone's baiting you like that. Well done, sir.

Since moving to Kentucky I have this happen to me a few times. It seems to happen mostly when I meet my son (28 years old) for a meal in any non chain restaurant. We both just look at each other and ignore them, that usually sets them off.

Now don't get me started with the feminist... That's the funny stuff..

6" lift kit 35" tires with cold air intake and exhaust
Its kinda funny because my daughter and I had someting like this happen. She is 12 and I didn't have to say a word .She looked at the group of people being loud all " adults " and said hey you guys need to be a little quieter this place is not a school cafeteria. You all sound like a bunch of 10 yr olds. Just be quiet its not that hard. I actually lol.

:rofl:I love it! Kids can get away with it a lot easier than we can. That would’ve started a fight in many scenarios as an adult. But when a kid tells you you’re acting childish.... What do you say!? LMFAO
