What are the thoughts on the (Edit) Tacoma EV Concept?

Figure this truck will directly compete with the Rivian RT1

I hate to admit it but it looks pretty badass. Pretty much a given that the production version would look much more tame.

I hope it's just the angle of this photo that's misleading and it's not the size and shape of a Kia Soul.

I would keep the Tundra and add that as a commuter truck.

If it can meet or exceed the Rivian R1T 'Max Pack' battery range then I'd favour a BEV Tacoma. However, I'd also need around 1600 lbs of payload and 9300 lbs of towing capacity.

I don't see you getting that with a midsize truck. They're all around 7500 lbs towing right now and, frankly, I'm not sure I'd even want to tow over 9000 lbs with a halfton.

    The R1T capacities are 1760 and 11,000.

That looks way better than the Rivian. Unfortunately, full electric vehicle technology isn't even close to meeting my requirements and probably won't be for 15 - 20 years.

Toyota Motor will build a new $1.29 billion battery plant for electrified vehicles in North Carolina, the company announced Monday afternoon.

The company expects the facility to be capable of producing enough lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles when production is scheduled to begin in 2025. The company said it plans to eventually expand battery production to up to 1.2 million vehicles per year.

The plant near Greensboro in central North Carolina is expected to create 1,750 jobs in the state, Toyota has said. The investment in the facility is scheduled through 2031.

Toyota and other automakers that have been slow to invest in all-electric vehicles are scrambling to move production of EV battery components closer to home to reduce costs and lower risks of supply chain disruptions.

It’s fine for mall crawlers. But having to stop every 100 miles while hauling or towing would be aggravating. Didn’t TFL quit testing a EV towing their trailer because it was so aggravating that it was taking too long to complete the trip?

I’d be interested. I said my next vehicle would be an EV. Although I’d probably get a sedan or Rivian’s SUV instead of a truck.

Yep. For me to buy an EV I need:

    1. 500km of range while loaded and towing 5000lbs minimum through the mountains.
    2. No reduced performance or range at -40 degrees celsius.
    3. The ability to recharge from completely flat to completely full in under 15 minutes.
    4. Chargers available at every single currently existing gas station, from centers like Los Angeles to butt fuck nowhere like Pink Mountain, BC.
    5. Those chargers need to be able to accomodate a truck and trailer so I don't have to unhook to charge, not a single vehicle like most chargers seem to be built for.

I’m pretty sure there will be little use for the tow hooks anyway. We are on the verge of a new kind of “stuck” that will take a generator capable of 220V, power cord, and 5 gallons of fuel.

    I dunno.

The upstarts like Tesla, Rivian and Lucid usually punch really high. Of course their vehicles are expensive, but they have very compelling performance that offsets the tradeoffs of BEV ownership.

Many of the legacy manufacturers chase the value proposition of BEV, usually coming up short on power or range.

We'll have to see how Toyota plays this. I expect it won't compete with Rivian, overshadow the Tundra, and it'll be more affordable, meaning it'll be compromised as a truck. Then again, many people just need something to put Raptor lights and a roof top tent on to commute in. So if it's midsize and has the Toyota sombrero logo on it, it'll find takers

Watch, there's gonna be a whole new breed of trailered generators: they'll get "off road" versions for people who want to run an EV recovery business

    I love the looks. Almost like a combo of a Tacoma / 4 Runner / R1T.

Not interested in the Tacoma version, but would love a similarly styled 4Runner version.
