Hey guys, any guesses at what the rattle you can hear in the background might be? Truck is a 2013 with 73k miles. I replaced the tensioner over the winter due to it whining, but I didnt replaced the belt. Could the serp belt be making this kind of noise? All the heat shields for the exhaust in the front of the truck are solid, and not moving. Radiator fan isnt hitting anything. Only makes the noise when it's cold, once it's warmed up it doesnt do it. It's totally kicking my ass... Any suggestions would be great!

Almost sounds like the timing chain doesn't it?

Only during idle when cold... Once warm, it goes away, and it's cyclical, so it does it for a few minutes then stops then does it etc. It's when the engine settles down after a cold start.

I replaced the tensioner back in march, so I called the company and had them ship me a replacement which should be here Monday. I'll try that, and see if it fixes the issue. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. The viscosity of the grease in the bearing on the tensioner is probably too thick when it gets chilly out making it noisy until it warms up. Either way, truck just started doing it so hopefully if it was the tensioner its just a fluke and the next one will last longer than 6 months.

Reminds me of an air compressor. Did you install air brakes? :crapstorm:

Sorry to say but this is normal.

The 5.7 sounding like a diesel during cold starts has been well documented since 2007.

Not concerned about the diesel sound. Concerned about the rattling you can hear that almost sounds like the timing chain slapping.

I had Gates warranty the tensioner I replaced over the winter, so I'm gonna throw that on and see if thats what's making the noise. Only thing I can think of that makes sense.

The first video was actually pretty good and the rattle was easy to hear.

On the second, same but it went away at the end. I hate to say this, but in the past I’ve learned the hard way on some things. How much is a factory Toyota tensioner pulley? It may be worth a shot.

Timing chain noise just don’t go away, in my experiences. Have you changed the idler pulley?

So I changed the serpentine tensioner back in March with a Gates tensioner, but because it was whining here and there. It was pretty easy to tell it was the tensioner that time. This time, idk. Our trucks have hydraulic timing chain tensioners, so if one of the timing chain tensioners is, for whatever reason, not building up pressure like it should be, that COULD explain why the noise goes away when it warms up. The other thing contributing to this theory is that it doesn't make the noise when the truck is initially started and revving higher RPM's, and the noise stops when I put the truck in gear - in both scenarios there is more tension on the timing chain which would would take away the slack and get rid of the noise.

I guess the serpentine tensioner bearing could be filled with shitty grease that is not viscous enough in colder weather to effectively lubricate the pulley, and that when it warms up it becomes viscous enough and the noise stops, but that sounds kind of odd? It's almost impossible to look at the idler pulleys on these trucks without taking the radiator out... none of the ones I can see are moving at all. Belt is running, what appears to be, smoothly. Could it be an AC compressor clutch? Water pump? Sure, but one would think those would produce constant noise. IDK, but I can't be the only person to ever have something like this happen...

What oil do you run? 0W20 right?

You have an excellent point on the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. I really hope this isn’t the issue at such low miles. I could expect this at 250k or more miles. Everything that you have ever posted about the care of your truck leads me to believe you take good care of it as well.

My Tundra would whine pretty bad in cold weather. Never thought much about it.

I would think A/C compressor or idler pulley maybe the fan hitting something. This is my first Toyota so take this for what it is but normally your timing chain just jumps time and the engine doesn't want to run.

Yeah whining wouldn't bother me all that much, I always have the dealer change my oil, so I hope theyre using 0w20. The dealer that did my last oil change went out of business like two weeks after the service, so... maybe they used some shitty leftover oil? IDK. I am due for another oil change, but I'm not hopeful that will fix the issue...

Take a long screwdriver or similar and press the tip of it against the areas where you hear the noise coming from. This will give you an idea where the concern exist.

    Like a stethoscope

I actually just bought a stethoscope this afternoon, so, gotta wait until tomorrow when I can cold-start it again to prod at it. How do you touch the rod of the stethoscope to moving pulleys though?

It would be worth the drain and fill for me. I can’t tell you how many times people have complained about service centers using the wrong oil. My brother used to manage a Jiffy Lube business for a while. I have changed my oil on every single vehicle since myself.

Touch close to the moving parts that doesn’t move.

Am of the impression the tensioner is your culprit.

You think the tensioner would do this and stop once the engine warmed up? I have a new tensioner in the box, just didnt want to put the work into changing it if it wasnt the problem.

Could be. The bearings could be slowing going bad on the replacements.

Try the feel test where the vibration is the strongest.

Buddy and I did a tensioneron an Accord We thought it was the alternator at first, but after pulling the tensioner, the bearings were shot.

I haven't, but I've thought about that. Question is how long can the engine run without the belt?

Well you don’t want to go driving around. I usually have the problem figured out after a few minutes so I don’t run them long.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
I'd say start with the cheaper options and work up.
Get the OEM tensioner...I think they're abt $30ish or so.
Get a breaker bar. I got a good one for $15 (I think) at Harbor Freight.
While you're at replace the belt with a Gatorback belt. They will stop any squeaks!

    https://www.amazon.com/Continental-...------------1-0&sr=1-3&ymm=2013:toyota:tundra

In case you search around and wonder....they used to be made by Goodyear, but Continental took over production a year or so ago.
