For purely educational purposes, does anyone actually prefer the 4.6L over 5.7L? Like are the MPGs that much better? Is there a real reason why toyota would have 2 options?

This video shows that they drive damn near the same:

I have owned both. Both are solid motors. If you have normal and consistent driving patterns, there isn't much difference in mpgs between the 2.

Ive also owned both. They drive very similar, the 4.6 has a ton of power for it’s size. Trading for the 5.7 was a waste of money honestly. The 4.6 tows just fine as well, gets like 1/2 mpg better in city which is nada

So you would recommend buying the 5.7L if you’re able to

I don’t think Toyota was wrong to drop the 4.6L from the later 2.5 gens. I was originally looking for a 4.7L when started 2nd gen Tundra shopping, but after reviewing specs and Fuelly numbers for both, I decided to get much more capability for only a bit higher fuel consumption.

Also, since 5.7’s are more common, so are used and aftermarket parts for their drivetrains.

    No Ragrats here.

I've never driven one, but I know a guy who drives a 4.6 Tundra. I guess he likes it.

In the past it always seemed like you took a big hit on resale with the 4.6.

    4.6: less power
    4.6: Lower resale
4.6: Don’t come in the trims 5.7 did
    4.6: You want more power

5.7: more after market products for more power
5.7: Less power needed for RPM’s so perhaps a smidge better mileage, but probably not
    5.7: You won’t regret over the 4.6

Chicks choose the bigger engine guys (maybe. Idk. Im married)
5.7: Feel more like a man
5.7: Larger fuel tank (I think?)

The 4.6 was really designed for the Lexus LS460, first and foremost, every other use is just an extra purpose for it to exist. The Lexus version is a bit more refined for smoothness yet mostly the same

And, when I rev it next to an ecoboost or a chevy I hear their tranny jam up or hear them piss their oil out

100%. However if i were comparing 2 trucks and the 4.6 one was cheaper i would have no issue with it. Just get one with the trans cooler. I guess they changed the rear end ratio and deleted the tow package from the 4.6 after a certain year unfortunately

    Hello Tundra peoples,

I have the 4.6L and have input. I found a much better price on the 4.6 and saved about 10k on a used Tundra with 80k miles before the pandemic prices in 2019. I found a smokin deal but had to travel kind of far to get. So you could potentially find a better deal if you shop around. Resale is probably a little lower as stated above but I’m not selling till it’s old and high mileage anyway. In my area I could sell for at least 10k more than I paid at this point but will not. My last two Toyotas I sold when they were nearing 300k.

I read about 2 very expensive potential problems with the 5.7L. 1-secondary air injection pumps and 2- cam tower seal leak. I could not find very many known problems with the 4.6. My mechanic is a Toyota specialist and said the 4.6 was pretty reliable from what he could tell. Many people do not have these above issues with the 5.7 though.

If your not towing massive loads I didn’t see the need for larger motor. I tow a raft trailer occasionally and may end up with a small camper someday but the 4.6 still has a pretty large tow rating. I forget how many lbs but more than I’ll ever need. Has 310 horsepower instead of 388 but still feels plenty powerful for me. It was so much more power than my old 2002 4.7 it was night and day.

I do get 1-2 mph better than my friends who have the 5.7. 16-17 in town and 18-19 highway. It is 4x4. With 3” lift so far still getting about the same but haven’t upsized tires yet so I’m sure it will go down.

I hate the 26 gallon tank on the 4.6. The gauge is sensitive and bounces all over on corners when I get below half a tank and truck dings like I’m out of fuel especially on left turns. It is touchy and with the small tank I get to a half tank fast. If it gets to a quarter it dings every little bump or corner and drives me crazy. Also when it’s at 1/4 tank and doing this it only will take 14-16 gallons so reserve seems to be huge and because off all of this I am constantly topping off before it gets to 1/2 tank and not near as low as the truck is reading. The tank can be swapped but costs a quite a bit even if you do work yourself. I may or may not do this some day.

Overall, the truck is pretty damn good.
