Another vote for Automotivetouchup.com. They use your VIN to color match and also make the paint fresh. They have the clearcoat as well.

There was a thread on here not long ago where someone posted a video of a guy essentially "melting" the chrome coating off of plastic parts with a Zep degreaser or some other degreaser (I cant remember specifically). But there was no other prep or work done to the part - just baptized in a bucket of this degreaser and voila! Has anyone tried this that saw the thread? Would be interesting to see if it worked on the bumper caps, and would make this duplicolor or autotouchup stuff work that much better.

I have removed the chrome from the headlight housings on the 2nd gens using a bleach solution. The bumper caps are metal though.

I just bought new OEM plastic bumper end caps. Much easier to paint. I would google to see if you can even paint over chrome. For some reason I believe the chrome has to be completely stripped away. The prep, primer and paint.

I would go with what cran said. I have used automotive touch up paint for my bumper end caps and they came out perfect. I actually also used it to also do the door handles and when I did a projector retrofit, I used it to paint the bulb housing.

this stuff with the spray max clear looks to do a great job. From other research it looks like if you scuff your chrome especially with orbital sander to get it nice and rough and use appropriate primer. Base and clear that painting chrome should hold up just fine.

I used the Duplicate-color Perfect Match for a mirror on a different car and was less than impressed. At the time, I thought I would have had better luck with Krylon.

You won’t be able to remove the chrome with degreaser from the bumper ends because it’s a different chrome than plastic uses. I wouldn’t paint over chrome especially in the front because the paint bond won’t be as durable as if you were to paint on a different surface. Other people’s experience will differ, as some paint will last, some will chip, depending on driving conditions. If you really need to paint over the chrome, scuff it as much as possible and use self-etching primer.

I used to use Automotive Touchup, and got great results. Now I just go to my local automotive paint store and purchase it there. They can even match it perfectly with swatches they have in-store, and put it in a regular can or spray can for you. It’s about the same price as Automotive Touchup.

I had totally forgotten that the chrome bumper caps were actually metal. I guess seeing some guys saying they bought plastic OEM caps and I just kind of assumed in my mind without even looking at mine closely enough that they were plastic, not metal. Thanks for looking out, and jogging my memory. I dont mind the chrome as much as others. For my truck it's only the bumper caps and grille surround/bulge. TRD off-road wheels accent it enough for it to be tasteful to my eye. I've thought about color matching bumper caps and surround/bulge but it's not super high on my list.

The previous owner on my truck paint matched the chrome end caps, and they’re chipping off now. Looked great when I got the truck, but it was just an on road truck back then.

You can always get the plastic ends as mentioned above, and paint those. It may be on my list as well.

Of course this is a new painted new cap. Might be able to sell your chrome ones and recoop some of the money. Just throwing it out.

plastic end caps at sparks parts surprisingly cheaper than I anticipated ($132 ea for fronts, $141 ea for rears). Oddly enough, the non-sensor versions are slightly more expensive and only available on the rear (from what I could see).

Yeah I couldn’t have sworn I read that to paint over chrome is hard and will eventually come off. I could be wrong though. That’s why I decided not to chance it and just bought the plastic ones.

Leer 100XR truck cap, 5100's on the middle setting. Ikon Add A leaf, Cooper Discover ATX3 275/70/18, Genuine Cooling Systems transmission cooler, chrome delete.
I purchased the plastic bumper ends unpainted from Sparks Parts and then had a local auto body shop paint them. They only charged me about $200 to primer, paint, and clear coat them. 100% worth the money IMHO, it looks factory. By the time you buy all the paint and supplies and factor in the time you are going to spend you are probably getting close to what you would pay a guy who knows what he is doing. Call around a few local body shops and see what they would charge you.

@AJTundy I would probably go this route if I ever pursued it. Like you say, by the time you buy everything yourself (unless you already have an airless sprayer and have some experience in automotive paint), it's probably not too much more to have a professional do it. I often suffer from delusions of grandeur, but I know enough to know that my rattle can paint job is going to look like a rattle can paint job.
