The worst thing you can do is something stupid, and it works.

    Eventually, consequences will catch up.

Today was one of those days and it reminded me of a few other times in my life, hence the part 3. I'm sure if I thought about it at length it would be like part 397 or something like that.
    Commonalities of my injuries:
    -Crunched for time
-It worked last time I did it this way
    -Frustration

    Anyway,
Today I was putting Stans tire sealant in my son's bike due to constant low air on tubeless wheels. I was trying to get it done before an appt this a.m. As i'm adding sealant through a threaded hose on the valve stem, which is attached to a syringe, I felt some resistance. Normally this is just a little sealant blocking the valve that has solidified and some pressure will blow through it. So I added a little force to the syringe. Don't force it, get a bigger hammer type of action. As I'm pushing, I'm thinking this is a lot of pressure and usually works by now. Just as I'm thinking this, the hose busts off the syringe and blows pressurized Stans into both eyes. Blinded, I start scrambling. Luckily, I had the bike leaned up against my garage wall where the hose bib is. Still scrambling , with eyes burning, I frantically feel for the hose bib and manage to turn it on. Now I can't see, but I can hear the water. The hose is behind the bike somewhere. I finally thrust my arm around enough I feel the water and grab the hose. Of course it's wrapped and tight so I can't pull it. In a mild state of self induced panic and pain I throw myself onto the sidewalk under the streaming water and manage to flush my eyes somewhat. I attempt to open my eyes enough to see but everything is in a severe fog as far as my vision goes. I stand up and decide to go into the kitchen where I can control the water easier and use the flexible sprayer. Still blurry I take a few steps and rack my head on our low hanging porch light. Now blurry, bleeding, and knocked back a few feet, i stumbled forward and immediately slam my thigh into the tailgate, because of course, I backed up to close to the garage. Worse for wear , I make it into the kitchen where my sister-in-law is hangin out and being the savior she is was able to hold my eyes open and flush them for a lengthy amount of time. Bleeding controlled, and a headache later I'm alright.
Lessons learned: I shouldn't have forced it when I knew it wasn't acting right.
Also, I guess yes, I should sometimes consider safety glasses in other situations aside from chainsaws and angle grinders.

    Part 2.
Back when the wife and I bought our first house. The dear Mrs. wanted a BBQ /bar.
Instead of buying a fancy 3k dollar job, I told her I could make one. Having never done it I thought, "How hard could this be?" So I gathered some 2x4's and framed up a sweet little bar. I rocked it with Hardibacker and decided to add a smooth stucco, painted to match our house. So, I gathered the materials and proceeded to stucco the bar with QuikCrete. As, I'm mixing this lye/fiberglass concoction it's getting everywhere. No luck with a shovel, so I grab the drill bit and mixer. This stuff is spattering and splashing all over my arms. This whole job takes me about 4 hours. As I'm doing this and mixing batches the Quikcrete is slowly, over time, making it's way down my sweaty arms into the rubber gloves. At the end of the process I remove the gloves to wash up and notice my hands look like orange peels. Literally, color and texture just like an orange. Oddly, I keep washing it off and notice my knuckles are bleeding. Thinking it's the sand in the mixture thats worn away the skin, I go on about my business. Over the next 30 minutes the pain increases and I notice several other bleeding areas I hadn't noticed before. I quickly run to the computer and search the MSDS and find I probably have some chemical burns going on. The neutralizer is Vinegar. Crap, I don't have enough in the kitchen. I jump in the truck and start heading for the store and decide to pull off since I see our local Dr's office on my way. They immediately take me in and drown my hands in a large bowl of vinegar. Ever see Fight Club? Yeah my hand looked like that. Well, not as severe, but you get the picture of a lye burn. Anyway, they proceed to usher in every MD, Intern, Nurse, and whomever else wants to see a dumb a**. If you're gonna be dumb, better be tough kind of thing.

Part 1: When I was really young.....Ran out of gas and tried to siphon from another car. Being super careful and not getting anywhere with my diligent suck and turn (enter your own comments here) I became extremely frustrated and took an inhale that would've made Snoop Dog jealous. This was about the same time as my previous inhale worked and was just below the end of the hose. I inhaled a good amount of gasoline. I tried to breathe but for some reason it was like my lungs were vapor locked. Running out of air, I fell to the ground and was finally able to inhale slightly. I immediately vomited and began gasping for air again. I came around eventually and began to control my breathing. I went inside and couldn't stop burping gas fumes. With a raging headache I fell asleep for the next 6 hours. My friend showed up the next day and walked into the room and was immediately knocked back from the burp fumes. Now, back then I was on a ranch and you just kind of dealt with problems. I was under the legal age to drive in town, which was over an hour away, and being young it never crossed my mind to seek any help. Don't think my mom ever even knew anything had happened. I can't believe I didn't have any long term diminished capacity from that one.

    Scene of the stupidity....

You know they make safety glasses? :p :p

Sorry, I couldn't help it. The ONLY reason I'm goofing on you is because I've done some of the same stuff, though in my case it was a) shaving cream and b) paint. Glad you're OK!

I'm a bike guy...ain't nothing worse than a Stans incident.

Try getting a bottle or two of the small Stans containers with the long nipple...I much prefer "injecting" it into the valve stem with those vs. the syringe type injector. Just refill from the larger bottle.

Oh yeah, and it won't work with the "race" sealant.

Yeah what happened is my stans solidified some chunks in the bottom. When filling the syringe , a small cluster lodged in the syringe taper. Solution, don’t buy in bulk. I’m usually filling 10-12 tires every few months.

This is why I ignore my wife when she makes fun of me for wearing safety gear, for example when mowing the lawn.

I second that... great stories. We’ve all been there. My stupidity once was I was doing some electrical wiring and needed to strip the outer insulation of some 8/3 wire. Like a dumbass, I was holding the wire with my right hand and pulling the utility knife toward me with my left hand. Yep, you guessed it, sliced all four fingers pretty good right in a perfect line. Two needed stitches and still have the line of scars to remind me of my stupidity.

My son was little at the time and still talks about the words that came out of my mouth.

Yeah I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry either at the first post, talk about dumbass things that I’ve done, I was screwing together some sheet metal that had inside flanges and was holding them together and was shooting a sheet metal screw through and the sheet metal screw got between my fingernail and drove right in there and stupid me, I didn’t have a reversible drill so my coworker had to come with vice grips and unscrew it a half turn out a time, I think I could still remember the decibel level of screaming at the time ...ha ha

Check the build link in my signature.
Similar one for me building a bar with a keg “tub” in it in college. We were just going to cut down a rubbermaid garbage can to the right height to put a 1/2 barrel in and then surround it with ice.

I had my utility knife and was cutting along the line we had marked. It was kind of a pain so I was cutting from the underside in a pulling motion. The blade slipped out of the plastic, and I looked down at a utility knife sticking out of my sternum.

My buddy helping me went white, until I kicked him to pull it together. I told him we needed to get to the ER, but I needed to keep this thing stable in the wound... we walked down the two floors to the street and he looks in my car (he didn’t have one) and said “I don’t know how to drive a stick.”

Three miles of city driving with me using my left hand to steer, my right hand to hold the knife in my chest, and him trying to find the right gear when I’d put the clutch in.

Two layers of stitches (20 in all) and it never did stay closed up. The good news is that the blade was mostly between two ribs along the edge of the sternum and never went deep enough to hit anything in the inside.

I only cut away from myself now...
