About two years ago I had a vibration and found out that the rubber on the carriage bearing was shredded. I replaced it as well as all 3 U joints. Everything was fine. Now I noticed a vibration decelerate in between 35 and 25 miles per hour, crawled under the truck and took a look and to my surprise found that the rubber on the two-year-old Carriage bearing was shredded again! I checked the bolts on the crossmember where the transmission ties down, and they were all good and tight. Did I just buy a cheap replacement part, or is this a common issue?

Yes the cheap aftermarket ones don’t last . I bought an aftermarket one only lasted a year, they sent me a free replacement which lasted a couple of months ( rubber comming out of mount) buy a spider brand or oem brand

Shop around for an OEM part. I found it the cheapest on eBay. But keep in mind that once I took it to my shop and the manager opened the box he said "that's really just a Spicer". So Spicer apparently makes this "oem" part for Toyota. Perhaps you could save some money by ordering from them?

I found mine for $145 free shipping on eBay.

I bought a $16 eBay one. so far it's worked. I don't recommend that though.

yep bank account is running low from it..
How much money goes into the center bearing and how much of a pain it is. I think I will do a single custom made shaft to mine when my center fails.

Wow that's in rough shape, When you replace it be sure its rotated 180 degrees from what you have now. The carrier bearing is offset .625" and needs one round hole facing down and not the 2 slots.

I tried getting a one piece driveshaft, I was told it would tool long and heavy. I just had my driveshaft modifier with a slip yoke at the rear end and new ujoints, and center bearing spicer parts

I'm going to buy the above for my carrier bearing. It's a spicer. Says it fits 2000-2006 tundra *4WD*. Not sure if you are 2wd or 4wd.

Use the code 5%OFF for 5% off. Also for my order total it was $62.79 with the code and shipping. Screaming deal for a spicer compared to a Toyota dealership part and it's the same thing.

I haven't purchased yet, so I can't speak to anything from experience. Just thought I would throw this out there!

After machinating unnecessarily over drive shafts and u-joint replacement I ended up doing nothing as nothing was wrong with the factory OEM double cardan set up.

I heard its best to eliminate the Carrier Bearing and do a ‘one piece’ from a COST perspective of redoing the double cardan. The cardan seems like its design is awesome for articulations off-road and it allows the shaft to tuck up higher under the body.

I also heard the one piece felt lighter (eliminates that heavy Cardan assy). NOT sure if its better at articulation.

Conclusion: If yours works still then keep it as is. If its broken consider a one piece for lightness and le$$.

Personally, I like the Cardan set up.

That looks about like mine. I have a $35 Amazon replacement that I have not yet installed. Oddly, I don't have any vibration.

Yes, definitely dont cheap out on the carrier bearing. I replaced my u-joints and carrier bearing on my 06 Tacoma a couple years back around 200k miles. I think I ordered directly thru Spicer or some other distributor maybe. It was the same OEM part but cheaper than what the dealership wanted. A driveline shop might help you find the right one.

Hey guys, Just finished my 2008 Tundra. all three bearings and the carrier bearing. did you by chance notice the alignment of the shafts looking from the trans, back toward the rear pumpkin? Mine goes at a slight angle after the carrier bearing. Not much but you can see it. Ill see if i can get a few pics uploaded. 20190502_163224.jpg

I have the carrier bearing adjusted as far to the side as I can get it. Is this normal? It does drive fine but haven't had it on the highway yet

    Hi there,

I signed up just to ask you a question, I am wondering what makes you so sure about the orientation? Not doubting you whatsoever but you're the first person who I've seen reference the 5/8" offset which is a topic I am interested in. It is interesting to me because when I look at how the driveline angle sits, it seems to me that what you're saying would be correct. However when I look at the steady bearing on my '05 DC it is mounted with the 2 oval holes showing. Seems backwards, but that's how it is on my truck. Also, when I reference parts diagrams directly from Toyota, it is hard to tell but it appears that the orientation is opposite to what you've described, showing the same way that my truck has it mounted. Truck keeps eating steady bearing rubbers and I'm wondering if this is something I should be looking at and hoping you can shed some light on the matter.

    Thanks,
    Tanner

You want to mount it so the offset moves the driveshaft closer to the ground, and away from the truck.

    HI Tanner,

The first Gens were assembled opposite of what they are now and have noticed most 07-08 were the same as you're seeing. I think Toyota figured out they needed additional drop in order to accommodate pinion angle variations. Ive not seen any 2010 up to current installed with oval slots facing down unless it was done by mistake. Hope this helps!

Thanks, very helpful and informative. I wonder if it may be worth it to make the change on my '05 - to put it the same way they are currently putting them on now. Thanks again.

If you're feeling any feedback in the driveline during hard acceleration it would be worth flipping.
