Does the Bakflip MX4 rubber seal hold up over time?

I'm looking to get a hard folding tonneau cover and really like the Bakflip MX4 for the low profile design and the ability to fold up closer to the cab for more bed access. I'm wondering how that weather seal that lays on the bed cap holds up to sun exposure and being folded up each time you open the cover compared to covers that sit on top the bed cap like the Rugged Cover Premium with a powder coated aluminum outter edge that still on top. It seems like that would be more durable in the long run than piece of rubber sitting on top like the MX4.

ANY rubber and plastic exposed to direct sun will deteriorate with constant exposure. It doesn't matter if it's trim, weatherstrips, exterior, interior, Toyota's or Bakflip's. Preserve any rubber and plastic with frequent treatments of Aerospace Protectant 303 with UV inhibitors. Get the convenient wipes.

i just put mine on, so i can't speak to longevity, but if you're referring to the gasket that you put on the bulkhead (top of the truck bed, closest to the cab), that foam strip is covered by that last section of the cover that doesn't fold up. No exposure to direct sun...[IMG]

My MX4 leaks horribly since I first put it on. Waste of a $1000. My G2 worked great for years.

Yeah same, where? I’ve had mine for 3 years and the only area that leaks is the tailgate area. The rest of the bed is nice and dry

    Nothing but good stuff.
Same here, worst of the Bakflips I’ve had. My G2 leaked far less.

My MX4 leaked like crazy. I was also surprised how quickly it dented. Screws rusted too. Junk. I got rid of it and got a Diamondback. So glad I made the switch.

Everywhere. I first noticed it when I got caught in a light rain and there was water, a good amount, in the bed. So I took a house set on a fog pattern and lightly sprayed the sides. There was water leaking in like a water fall. I readjusted the bed cover and sprayed it again with the same results. I have a video but it won't load on this site. The water is literally constantly flowing in. I've posted a pic before on here in someone else's thread. I'll try to post some pics in this thread. Keep in mind, I expect these covers to leak a little on the corners, but for it to leak on the sides as much as mine does is ridiculous.

Bak flip, side channels get clogged very easy, have to wash it like a gutter with a toothbrush, the channels only holds ⅛” of water, and the end cap that hold the drain tube cracks if you try to move things around and hit the tub. The lock is I joke, You could open it with a coat hanger. It’s ok for a weekend worrier that want a cover. But if you want a real cover I would recommend diamond back HD.

Agree. I was so frustrated with that $800 POS Bakflip.

Interesting.. mine only leaks in the tailgate area. I just washed my truck and double checked to see if any other areas leaked but nada.

Maybe you didn’t use your bed that much, when the hook that hold the pop rod start coming loose, that’s when it start leaking. They drill through the side rail that channel the water to put a hook in it, that’s a bad design
