My dog flips when the doorbell is rung. The first few times it happened it wasn't even my doorbell, it was a doorbell on the TV. I was curious because he instinctively ran to the front door barking even though our doorbell had never been rung while we had him. It was maybe 2 months later that our doorbell was rung with him in the house for the first time.

Do your dogs hate the doorbell too?

My dog does it when the TV makes the noise too. I’m sure it’s something in the pitch or tone that pisses them off

One of ours does, and the other just sort of follows suit. The one that hates the doorbell actually just hates any unknown or unexpected sound and will bark her head off.

My dogs bark at the doorbell and also if they hear the Ring camera alert. I mean anywhere they hear the alert, it could come from a strangers phone at the store and they go crazy.

Yes, all our 3 dogs, will start barking, but wont go to the door. They will bark at where there at and when they see me or my wife walking to the door they will follow.

Our doorbell doesn't even ding dong like an old fashioned doorbell, never has since the dogs have been in existence yet when the TV ding dong doorbell rings, the dogs go ape sh*t!

I set up a family members ring chime to just be dogs barking when someone rings the doorbell since it's inevitable anyway.

Mine go nuts. Only one is a barker though. They are just excited to see who is at the door for them to love on. If my house was robbed, they would gladly help out if they got pets and maybe a ball thrown for them. Definitely not guard dogs.

Our dogs go full retard for no reason 75% of the time, the door bell is just one thing of many that triggers them. 'A' for effort protecting the house, but if they could be more accurate at sound identification that'd be great :D accidentally hit the water bottle against a wall and they think an invasion is imminent.

When we built our house I didn’t put a doorbell in. Didn’t even run the wires. I’ll always have dogs that let me know if someone’s coming down the drive.

Nope. Glass front door and manual gate, so leo knows when company shows up before they ring the bell.
And he's happy to see everyone.

My german shepherd hates the door bell. You would think the door bell beat him in a past life. My golden doesn't care. He also has only barked 13 times in the two years I have had him so, he might be odd

Our pit mix HATES it and will charge the door while barking. Sometimes I ring it right in from of him just to screw with him.

Our Husky couldn't care less. She's a really strange dog though so she doesn't count. She's more cat than dog and has gotten really weird in her hold age.

A friend of mine had one of those huskies raised by cats. It would talk, argue, and really lay on the eyes during pouting. My ridgeback is smart and social, but not like that.

Her doberman is a scaredy cat, but knows how to smile for attention.

My dogs bark at the doorbell on TV and run to the front door.

We have never had a doorbell.

    It’s in their DNA

I am sure it's a learned behavior. You don't bark at the doorbell too do you?

Depends on how they were socialized at an early age. Many people socialize around tricks, and people, vehicles, etc. but because the doorbell is such a random occurrence - it is not socialized properly.

Same reason why your dog rushes the door whenever someone comes in or a new visitor appears - they weren't taught the right behavior.

Fixing it in an adult dog will take some time, but can generally be easily accomplished. Will have to unwind years of experience knowing that the doorbell is sudden and suspicious.

Train your dog around the doorbell just like you do to sit/stay/roll-over. Some folks train the dog to go get a ball (can't bark if the ball is in the mouth), or train the dog to come get them when it goes off. Lots of variations, but all around the idea of how do you want your dog to behave?
