Does anyone camp with an Off Road/Expedition Trailer or Teardrop?

I've been doing tons of research on the smaller types of trailers as they are easier to tow, you can get to more places than a 5th wheel, and they have everything I theoretically "need" when it comes to camping, and nothing I don't need...

Does anyone have experience or advice on what to get? I'm thinking of a Teardrop and adding a RTT to the top for 2 boys.

I have been looking into Hiker Trailer:

I'd love something like that. I've got a POS pop up that I'm considering building into something like the above.

I just ordered one from bearteardrops. About 2 month wait. He is local Oceanside. We went and talked with him checked out his shop and decided to go with him. It was a little more expensive but evened out because of no shipping. Another plus is it’s local. If there is any problems it’s not a far drive. He will add and subtract stuff according to your needs. I recommend driving down and checking them out. That is assuming you still live in Temecula

    My biz partner has the R Pod. He says;

    • The smaller you buy, the more expensive things get pound for pound
    • Change all bulbs to LED, massive savings on electricity use
    • Buy used, lots of people buy and rarely use, then sell
    • If you buy used, from garage/storage only
    • He uses his lots, and he actually says a camper is better

I've actually seen them during my research. They seem to build a QUALITY product.

What did you end up buying thru Bear? Do you have a list of add-ons?

Most of these now come standard with LED lighting. Also, I keep trying to find them used on craigslist/offerup etc. but they seem to be pretty rare.

We were initially good no to buy a tcteardrops. The price was good but shipping to Cali was 2k. It had what we wanted but wasn’t 100% sold on style and there was the fact we couldn’t get a hands on demo. We were also looking at leaddog? Anyway there is a rental place in laguna niguel (sp?). They use that trailer for their rentals. I think it was off grid rentals. We were going to check those out but didn’t get around to it. Anyway while looking at tc teardrops videos bear popped up. I saw it was local and wanted to get hands on trailer. I absolutely love the style so much more. He hand builds them and will customize to your specs and budget. He will add and subtract stuff to your budget. While we were there he showed us different things he can do with trailer like diamond plate on floor with tie downs, storage under floor etc. we went with the Apache AT with 2 doors, stainless steel prep area and swing and sway hitch. We are also having him mount spare on back of rack so our rtt anex will open into trailer. I recommend making an appointment and talking with him. You can probably pitch ideas back and forth. One thing to consider on price though if you go out of state is shipping tax title and registration.

We currently have 1 son and a rtt. It became a problem setting up and taking down on off-roading trips. So we will mount rtt on trailer for base camp.

That's one reason I don't think I want to have a RTT mounted over the bed of the truck. I don't want to have it on my truck 24/7. Rather it be on a trailer for when I actually need it.

We usually just take it on and off every time. It’s my daily driver so I don’t want it up there until needed

I bought this before they were being upgraded by the manufacturers for off road. I did upgrades myself: flipped the axle, increased wheel and tire size, added an extra battery (2 big deep cell), and carried along a solar panel. We went places only a 4x4 with a winch could get into or out of. Never had a flat on the trailer. Pulled it with my 1st gen Taco. All the comforts: gas reefer & furnace, screen room and outside grill. Dig a hole for crap and use a blind. Outdoor shower.

It's not a back country rig, but we just got this small travel trailer. They make a Baja version of this one which has more ground clearance. It sleeps 5.

Just checked out their website. Did you get the Apache or Trail Hawk? Both very nice and will tow pretty much anywhere I'm thinking. Lots of options. Dang I need to find a money tree......

I really, really, like these. http://www.intechrv.com/maxflyer.php

We had a pop-up for almost 20 years and finally sold it last year. If we were looking to get into another trailer it would most likely be one of these maxflyer's.

Compared to a lot of these small trailers these can be found decked out for a very reasonable price (comparatively) to some of the other we'll known brands. What I really like is the entire structure is welded square aluminum tubing.

Edit: Oh, the Overland Expo West will be happening in Flagstaff in May. You may want to check that out if you're really interested in a true off road trailer.

    Some stuff
i've been looking at these for a long time.

at overland makes quality stuff. turtleback as well. there's also vmi and schutt. ruger is here in denver and great for a basic setup. i would say the top of the heap would be the ones from conqueror. the aussies know what they're doing.
