I had the dealer do my first 5 oil changes so I don't know how tight the filter cap is from the factory. I have run into some that are real tight from the factory but never after a dealer service a vehicle. Did my first oil change on the Tundra on Sunday. I was all prepared with filters, Fumoto valve, filter wrench and metal cap. Not knowing any better I bought a cast filter wrench. The oil filter cover was on so tight that I broke the cast one and the filter cover. Luckily Advance had a better one. When I tried again I had a 2' cheater bar and my neighbor had to hold my legs. I guess the dealer was afraid that the cover would vibrate off. It certainly was not going to do that with 100+ ftlbs of torque.

The wrench has nothing to do with it. The problem is your dealer. Oil changes are done at dealerships in the "Oil Bay Department." In other words, the guy who just got promoted from washing and vacuuming vehicles. Makes $1.00 over minimum wage. Oil Filter housing should be torqued by hand to 18.5 lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench that means tighten by hand with no tool as hard as you can till you fart. Most likely your housing was torqued down by a pneumatic air wrench which was set to NASCAR lug nut standards when Oil Change Boy gave you a free tire rotation with your speedy oil change. My daughter recently had her oil changed on her Tacoma at the dealership and I found a red rag and a plastic drink bottle with the drain plug housing cap jammed in behind the manifold. I bet your oil drain plug (9.5lbs torque) is driven home, too. You can actually deform you oil pan by over tightening the nut. Hope this helps.

I keep hearing oil filter being over torqued horror story.
I just did engine oil and diff fluid change on my 2019 1k miles (lol).
But, I have been maintaining my previous tacoma for over 10 yrs.
This is just my experience. It may not be true but here it goes.
When changing oil, drive vehicle for 30 mins or so before attempting. Oil filter has that rubber seal. During hot and cold cycle when using for 6 month plus, them rubber seals kinda welds into housing.
If you heat it up good by driving 30 mins before wrenching filter, it comes out alot easier than when you try cold.
    Just my experience again.

Same. That’s why I refuse to let other people change my oil. I to had to use a cheater. 18ft lbs, 9 on the center cap.

Ahh, yes. The good ol' tighten-it-'til-you-fart torque method. Been using it for years now with 100% reliability.

The MotivX oil filter wrench/socket tool appears to be a cast unit. Can anyone confirm?

Keep that cast filter wrench and put a big hose clamp around it. These were my first thoughts. In all seriousness I don’t think many will have a problem with their cast wrench, it’s more because the dealer tightened the crap out of it. If it was installed properly the tool should not break.

Didn't have a problem with the wrench I used (borrowed a friend's), but man was that cap on tight.

Also, one should lube the rubber ring on the filter with fresh oil before screwing it on by hand. This helps when it needs to be removed.

Reminds me of when I had to have my wife's Camry towed to the dealer after I tried everything I could to get the oil filter housing off. I didn't break my tool but I snapped both the tabs off that the tool goes around. In return that cracked the housing so I couldn't even fill up the car with oil and drive it there... After fighting it long enough I gave in. Couldn't believe how tight it was.

Guess who was the last one to change the oil... That's right, the dealer. They got an ear full but it didn't really help my case. That was an expensive oil change and my last at the dealer.

It took every thing I had to get the cap off on my wife's Lexus. 36 inch breaker bar. 4.6L The same as my truck. The wrench is still on the cap. I can't get it off. I had to buy a new one to change the oil in my truck.

The lesson here is never let the dealer change your oil unless you will never do it yourself. I wonder if the dealer is even changing filters if it's that tight.

The relationship between the oil filter and the fart filter is fascinating.

The oil drain plug was fine. I put a Fumoto on so no more worries there. One thing I recommend (especially with cheaper wrench) is use a socket in it instead of using just the rachet end in hole. Not sure if I want to spend money for a skid plate with access panel. I am thinking about just cutting access hole in OEM but figuring out where to cut might be a problem.

Yea, I played around with that thought myself. Then I called a metal fab place who wanted a minimum of 175 to cut the hole and make a cover. Then I came to my senses and got in on the RCI group buy. Now I have a sweet skid and my oil changes will be really simple!

I bought the pro skid just to make oil changes easier on me. No plans to let dealer do my oil changes.

That filter cap can be a bit tight though.

Actually of the many helpful posts I've read here this may be the Best! However I eat a lot of tacos so I might be prone to under-torqueing at 8 lbs. or less :taco:
