I'd like to get a bed topper to keep my tools secure and dry in the bed of my 01 RCLB. Instead of buying an expensive new one I've decided to fabricate one. My truck already has a heavy duty headache rack installed and my plan is to integrate it along with a new fabricated rear support into the structural design of my homemade shell. The rest of the ribs and spines will be made from metal hat channel and covered on the inside with flat sheet metal and on the outside with thick corrugated sheet metal. I plan on putting a few air vents, lights, and shelves in there as well as mounting an inverter and a 120v plug. Any other ideas for this old work truck?

I would also make sliding drawers. Just to help keep things organized. I am actually working on that now. I love the decked system but I can’t justify spending $$$ right now

You dont even mention the obvious choice between an expensive new one and the one you build?

I have found used ones in great condition for very low prices everywhere that I have searched and have also purchased several of them myself.

I love to make things more than many do but I would much rather buy a real manufactured shell for cheap than trying to make one myself even if this is an area that I work in every day.

You can use a Tape MEasure and Pencil and Paper and find countless used models that should work for you I bet.

I also bet that it will cost you more to make your own.

I guess we'll see what the cost difference is. I'll post up progress pics and materials/time investment as I go. My estimate for materials so far is around $400 total for the shell not including drawers, inverter, plugs or lights. My plan is for an over the cab style with the total height being ~4.5 ft and having a locking rear hatch with tempered glass plus tempered glass view window up front. Wish me luck!

I have personally bought really nice working shells for $100.

What are you going to build that might be better than a manufactured shell?

I have had problems finding many used shells around here in Columbia SC. I don't know the bed dimensions of other vehicles and most of the shells I see are for Ford/Chevy/Dodge
