I have been looking at the tuffy and OEM console safes since I got the truck. Happened to be at Menards and found a steel lock box on sale for a whopping $15 that looked like it would fit dimensionally. Got it home , dropped it in and it fit with plenty of extra room. The bottom is pre drilled for mounting. The factory 10mm bolts in the bottom of the console are a hair too short and only grab about 1/16 of threads. A quick trip to the hardware store with a 1/2” longer bolt and it was good to go. Pulled pretty hard on it and it doesn’t budge at all. Fit my G19, spare mags and wallet with room to spare. Will get some thin foam or something to put in the bottom to reduce noise but otherwise will leave it alone.

How strong is that little lock and tab ?
It doesn't look like it would take much to bend that if someone with strong fingers gave a good pull on the lid.

My console lock box is pretty heavy gauge steel and has extra support where the lock engages... making it nearly impossible to pry apart.

It’s decently strong , don’t get me wrong it’s no tuffy or oem by any stretch of the imagination, but let’s be real none of them are true safes and can be broken into fairly quickly if someone really wanted to.

Nice idea, but for peace of mind and actual protection against theft, I don't mind spending the extra money on a Lock'er Down. I have this one in my Platinum, and love it.

    Thank you.

I was able to dig around with that info and just ordered the same thing from Walmart.com for $302 after tax and shipping.

I use mine for my valuables such as my wallet, phone and passports when I leave the truck to go hiking.

I would not trust any cheap safe especially with firearms. I have the Lock'er Down Extreme in mine....well worth the $400.

I got a sweet deal on mine. Got the extreme as well. They're local here in San Antonio, and let me pay a heavily discounted cash price and installed as well. The extreme is definitely worth the extra $$$.

If I was able to find a console safe that didn't take up the entire console I was gonna go with that. Ideally I wanted a half-console safe so I can keep the tray on top & maybe a section of the abyss open, too. (Reasonably priced of course.)

Couldn't find what I was looking for so went with this. That said, for $400 bucks you could just buy a handgun if it got stolen. No offense, but that's an insane price for a safe that's what... only 1/20th the size of a full size gun safe that'll hold a dozen rifles? But it's only about half it's cost. I realize R&D blah blah blah, but still doesn't make it worth 3 to 400 bucks to me. It'd prob take about as much force/time to get inside that Hornady lock box than a console vault.
