I've been looking for a dual spare carrier option that didn't take up a majority of the bed space, and fit 35"s. The SDHQ rack is really cool, but takes up too much room. I had 1 spare underneath...uncomfortably tight squeeze and felt it may present clearance issues at some point. That said, I pulled my plastic liner and set out to make my own. I realize this is amateur stuff at best, but I'm still working with 1 arm for the most part. Had fun though.

I used 3/16" x 1-1/2" x 3' stock for the runner peices and @csuviper great write on adding a DIY bed rail system for the hardware to attach the peices securely to the existing bed rail holes. I drilled and beveled 9/16" holes for four 1/2" carriage bolts with washers and nuts for wheel placement.

I plan to add a rail to the front of the bed, and potentially the sections left over in the rear. The remaining piece that looks like I didn't measure right, I'll use for a floor jack mount on 1 side and  on the other.
I'll spray it with bedliner after I clean out the bed, with plans to have the bed lined soon. Also change the bolts to the same size as the wheel studs and use lug nuts to secure the wheels.

    Thoughts?
Will I end up warping the bed? Should I add some Rago or TC bed stiffeners? Is this ridiculous and useless? Will people mistake me for B.J. Baldwin now? Did I hurt myself lifting those damn spares up there...yes.

Great job! To bad I can't do this due to solid one piece tonneau cover :( gonna have to hack away underneath to fit a 35

Hell ya. That’s what I like to see! Don’t get me wrong I love expensive flashy parts as much as the next guy. But I really love do it yourself stuff that gets the job done at a fraction of the price with a little ingenuity.

I like it! Ive been trying to figure out what i could do with the same outcome. I wish one of these manufacturers would put a kit out like this, i dont have the means to make one.

Thank you guys, appreciate the kind words.
As @Hbjeff mentioned, the carriage bolts may snap while offroading. I did ensure I used grade 5 bolts, 120,000 psi tinsel strength minimum rating. I'm wondering how I can further secure these so I can hit the dirt without worrying. Possibly a block underneath the tires to support the weight better? See attached

@Larmand You just need a drill and some bits man. Sure, I used my drill press and bench grinder. But I'm also 1 armed currently, ahahah. I can make a template if that'll help?

    @Slayer best name ever!

Love it. I would try to get a little more support underneath 'cause that's a lot of weight when wheeling.
YES, you should get bed stiffeners.

No you dont need to get me a template. I can take some measurements, easy enough. I dont have a drill press but im guessing i could make it happen. I need to get my full size spares 1st.

Glad you asked! I was thinking how I will improve on your idea for my truck already haha.
You could add two more bolts to the inside of the wheel (hub opening) to a plate that spreads past the hub opening.
Or if ya have a welder like I do, build a steel bracket that extends out to a spreader bar.

Also it would help to weld a drop bar to the floor for weight support.

Thinking a block/wedge/chalk or "U" shape bottom support would work great.

I really think yall are on to something BIG here. I would certainly purchase something like this if a vendor, could produce this. Definitely making the bolts the same size as wheel studs, so we can secure with lug nuts. Maybe if @brimy311 is looking for a new little project. Since he seems to be producing all the goodies everyone is asking for.

I don’t think support under the tire is the issue. Its the front back and side to side forces that will pull and break the bolts.

Had another thought. Maybe if you could make a wheel chock like support and get a ratchet strap around it?

I think it’s a practical place to store the spares and you’ll figure it out.

im pretty sure that would work just like the one he made. he just didn't have the bed tracks to work with. I bet you could use it in the same location!

Maybe so, i might give a try but i find the $270 price a bit excessive for this. If brimy can put something i might go that route otherwise ill try fabbing my own up.

My tires might have to mount a little higher than the ones posted as i dont have as much bed space with the CrewMax or mount to the rear of the bed. Itll get figured out soon enough.
