This DIY is to install aftermarket LED lights on the rear of the truck and to tie them into the rear tail light reverse lights. The lights will only turn on when you are in reverse.

    Parts:
    (2) LED Lights - Here is the link to the lights used for this install. ~$20

    (6) 1/4" Washers
    (4) Quick Splice Connectors

    Tools:
    19mm Wrench
Allen Wrench - Comes with this kit for install of bolts for the bracket
    Wire Cutter/Stripper/Crimper

    Attaching the LED Lights

The location of the lights is really up to what looks the best for you.
The location that was chosen for this install was a bolt that attaches a part of the bumper to a bracket under the truck.

    image.jpg
    image.jpg

Coincidentally the bolt just behind the one we used to mount the light was removed previously. We used this hole to run the electrical through to reach the electrical harness.

Pull the existing bolt out, insert it into the hole in the bracket, add 3 washers and bolt back up. Repeat with the other side. Simple install if you pick the right location.

    Electrical Install

Locate the wire harness that runs under the rear bumper to the tail lights.

In the closest location to where the lights are located, pull the wire bundle out of the split wire loom.

Use the quick splice for 18-14 gauge wire (blue) to splice into the existing wires on each side.
The wiring that goes to the revers lights are both blue with red line and white with black line.

    • Blue wire with red line = Power = Tie to red wire on the light
    • White wire with black line = Ground = Tie to black wire on the light
Review how to install the quick splice on youtube if you have never used one before.

Once you have spliced the new wires into the existing wires, use electrical tape to wrap the quick splice connectors and wires. Then push the wires back into the split wire loom.

    image.jpg

Make sure to test to see if the lights work. If they do not then you may not have made a good connection with the quick splice connector. Check each one by pulling the plastic down, but not the wire out of the metal connector. You should find one or multiple that aren't fully into the metal connector. Reinstall and re-test.

Once complete, enjoy the added light in reverse.

I like this mod. Thanks for the great quick DIY.
Will order that ASAP and let you know how it goes!
Hey Sean how well do these lights match the LED's in your taillights?

Sorry, guess I should have worded that different.
I figured they'd be brighter. But are the close to the same color-wise? (5k, 6k, etc...)?

Yep. You wouldn't notice a color difference between the two IMO.

The link says "Ultra bright 1530 lumen light will light up everything you need to see."
The lights are $19.67 + shipping or free shipping with prime. Other items are cheap.

$25 at most for all the parts + shipping (not including tools)
$450 installed by me :) Members get a deal 399.99 :D (or a case of beer)

Yea the led number will be the same. It just refers to the connector/size.

One of the first DIY mods I did was to add a set of Rigid lights flushed into my rear bumper. Since I use my truck for towing, and sometimes have to back up to my trailer to hitch up at night, I want to see as much as I can when in reverse.

Cutting the holes to flush mount the lights into the bumper on a brand new truck was pretty scary!
I also didn't want to pull all the power for my led reverse lights from my factory tail light harness, so I ran a power wire from the battery directly to the back of the truck and to a relay then used the positive wire from the factory harness to switch the relay on and power up the new reverse lights.

Very nice. Since the LEDs are low amps it's not a problem to tie into the factory harness, especially if you change the factory to led also. The way you did it is the proper way though to not affect anything. Would do that with large front light bars.

I did the same setup when I wired up my front lightbar. I know the electrical system on Toyotas now a days is sensitive, so I just figured better safe than sorry. As for my factory reverse lights, just left them stock, my new ones are so bright I could take them out and it wouldn't make a difference.
