Why would Toyota go to the expense of a thermostat if it wasn't needed? The only reason would be because there was a financial incentive - either fuel economy (CAFE), sales (not a selling point), or reliability reputation (future sales).

    Queue overcooling debate.

I no longer have a restrictive thermostat. So long!

Totally agree. Just ordered my filter and some stainless hose clamps.

How often do the filters need to be replaced?

From what I've gathered from different forums is every atf change 24-30k miles or yearly. I don't do drain/fills but complete fluid change every 2 years regardless of mileage. I just picked up a filter for install with my rebuilt transmission.

Have you guys encountered the drain plug on the transmission being really soft? I have had mine off a couple times now and the internal hex is staring to deform. I've kept to the 30 ft lbs and always use a 6mm hex fully inserted.

It's bad enough that I don't want to reuse the plug again after I next remove it.

The 3rd gen is too new, but I am wondering if anyone has found a suitable aftermarket or alternate part number.

Here is the part number: 90341-12034 for the softest metal drain plug in the world. I've only had it out maybe 3 times and the 6mm is rounding.

Did the same in mine and you are correct, it was super easy. I'm a big guy but it was easy to crawl under the truck and access the line, snip it, snip it again to account for the size of the filter, install filter and ss clamps, and I was done in about 10-15 minutes.

Its there to warm up the trans faster to optimal efficiency temp. However normal driving blows way past that temp

I do a drain and fill once a year for the last 3 years. The 3rd time the fluid came out good. Just do it once a year and not worry about mileage. I also tow a 6k trailer.

My normal city driving gets the trans to 203. With the thermo pinned it stays around 170

Says he has a 2nd. I have to remember to check profiles or what forum it's posted under as a lot has changed with 3rd Gen.

Is there any fluid loss when installing either of these. I have both parts sitting on my work bench but I don’t have any trans fluid.
    Thanks in advance

2nd. However I can’t read unfortunately, there was another discussion about 2nd recently too. It does seem however that toyota has carried over their trans temp theories to the 3rd

For the filter it was a tiny amount, I didn't even have to add any since it was such a small amount.

So the PPE wouldn’t be good just to add?
