    Nicely done Norma!

Goin' out to the garage right now to give my diff a warm sponge bath and a cotton ball carnauba wax. ;)

    Salt never sleeps!

Thanks for the posts and fantastic pics.

That's right, be sure to check it yourself. I have to admit I never climbed underneath. It was fully serviced at a dealership since day one.

Everything done on time and in accordance with the service maintenance schedule. Timing belt, to regular oil changes/tire rotations.

So the fact that the service department NEVER MENTIONED I had a real real serious rust issue on the back side of the diff, well that pissed me off. No rust on the front side, go figure?

The leak just started recently, after the kid that came to look at it mentiomed it to me, and I saw with own eyes a drip and that the bottom quarter or so was wet. Well I looked at my driveway and noticed a couple very small oil spots. I basically park in the same spot/area.

Now I have cardboard underneath so I can keep track of how much oil is leaking. Still a small amount, but it adds up, so it's no wonder it was down a quart.

Instead of wax tho, I'd go with fluid film, twice a year.

Glad to hear you were able to loosen the fill plug without breaking anything. I was going to suggest liberally spraying it twice a day for a week with some kind of penetrating lubricant, but sounds like you got it done with just some heat. Crazy how perfectly new and clean it looks on the front side.

Once you get your new vehicle and trade this one in, you should email Toyota Corporate pics of how bad the rear diff looks and let them know they need to reconsider rustproofing that part from the factory.

Just kidding about the carnauba & cotton balls. Fluid Film's a great product, for sure.

The wait for an ordered truck is tough enough without the threat of a diff pumpkin blow-out.

    Good luck!

Ya heat did the trick, about two minutes directly on the fill plug. Put the socket on it, gave the end of the ratchet a couple good hard taps and it immediately broke loose.

I'll get another quart tomorrow, plus I'll drive it there and back. Well first I'll check to see how much it dripped over the last 18 hours. So if it's very little then I'll drive it. Which is what I'm pretty sure it won't be much.

Then I'll top it off and keep an eye on it. Oh and the fill plug will be just a smidgen more than hand tight. Not gonna let it lock up again, I put a little oil on the threads.

Thanks, well when my husband first got the truck I'm sure he probably did wash and wax even underneath. Ten years old and has 50 coats of wax on it. Still looks great, just wish the service department had said something. They just put new rear brakes last May. No way they didn't see the condition of the diff.

Here's a pic approximately 18 hours after adding a quart of gear oil. Truck is parked slightly on an angle so that's why the drip drip drip is elongated. Measures about 4"X2"

I'd guesstimate around 1/10th of an ounce dripped out. I should tape a plastic cup underneath to see how much really drips out. On cardboard I'd guess a little bit is absorbed into the material.

But overall you can see it's a very slow leak, but a leak is a leak, so I'm happy I'm now able to add more when needed. Six more weeks and my new Taco should arrive!

Went out and bought another quart, so this morning I added about 3.5 ounces more.

She's full now. Got plenty left I'm sure to easily last six or more weeks. Can't wait for my new truck to arrive.

Ok, after adding a little more gear oil Saturday, we went out to dinner and took the truck about 45 miles one way. So it was more or less a 90 mile trip.

Yesterday, I opened the plug and the oil was pretty much full to the top!

So I definitely have no worries at this point. It's going to easily make it until my new truck arrives! Only four more weeks or so......maybe a little longer. But like I said No Worries!

While under there tho, I have to say as I looked around, I couldn't believe how much rust. Pretty much a Rust Bucket.

After climbing out from underneath I made a fist and banged it on the rear bumper......oh yeah, you, better believe it......CHUNKS WERE FALLING OFF FROM EVERYWHERE.

Definitely time for a new truck. New England winters/salt reeks havoc on vehicles.

Been about two weeks and I checked the diff, and it still full.

Also got a build date for the 7th, so my new truck looks like it should be here the 3rd week this month.

    Hopefully!
