So... I’ve been thinking. I plan on keeping my truck forever. and i’m thinking when the motor goes out that I wanna diesel swap it. Probably a Duramax with the new allison 10 speed. Will that fit with minor cramming?

Doubtful. You would have to meet all regulatory requirements related to a diesel- the swap would cost more than a new truck with a diesel. The added weight of all the component would be a huge hit on your payload as well.

For reference- even trying to swap a 5.7 into a truck with 4.6 gasser is cost prohibitive. Much cheaper and better engineered to just get a truck with the engine you want.

You talking a baby duramax (3.0) or one of the big ones (6.6)? Baby Duramax would be a maybe, I would think the trans area would be the bigger issue for size. Big one no way, there's a reason HD truck front ends are so huge, there'd be no more room in the Tundra front end for any other pieces beyond the engine.

The Isuzu Duramax motor is pretty compact. 30”x30”. The 5.7L looks wider than that.

Here is what will get you:

The 5.7 is 489 lbs, and the DM is 735 lbs.

LML series DM is 397 hp/765 #tq. Your frame might not handle the torque. L5P might twist the frame with 445 hp/915#tq.

Now you need the drivetrain to match the added weight and power. Allison 1000 is 330 lbs dry, and the AAM 11.5 axle will need to be customized to fit under your truck. Probably best to just order a custom axle from Strange Engineering, and get the wheel bolt pattern to match the front. The S-60 axle is pretty stout, and the last one cost me 2900.00 to my door.

I’m not sure on the front axle components and how that would handle the added weight. I’m guessing...ok.

Like others have said, I would just go get a GM truck with the Duramax. I did, and love it. 50k miles of pretty hard towing and my only complaint is tires. On my 3rd set already. Diesels eat tires.

Yeah if the motor ever goes out just put another 5.7 in it and be done with it for another 20 years.

That's a pretty big if, better drain the oil if you want it to happen any year soon.

I think motor will outlast the body if you change oil and all the fluids regularly.

With the right fab skills and a solid budget, I do think it is possible. I haven't personally measured or looked into this in depth, but would be a cool idea.

I just watched a Youtube video with them putting a Cummins (can't remember if it was a 12 or 24 valve) into a Mustang - it fits. So a V8 diesel into a Tundra should be a piece of cake.

Several years ago the performance division at General Motors made three copies of a V-16 engine that was essentially 2 LS-1 engines in one block. One went on a stand and toured the country, one went in the Cadillac "Sweet Sixteen" concept car and they put the third in a Chevy Tahoe.

They had to stretch the front fenders and frame on the Tahoe 12 inches to fit it in.

Where there's a will (and unlimited resources) there's a way.
