Didn't get frame fixed before the deadline...

New to the forum, not new to the Tundra! Need some advice from those in the know. I have a 2007 Tundra Crewcab TRD with only 70K miles. I recently started leaking breaking fluid, and took it to the dealership here in Ann Arbor MI. Apparently the (cross beam) frame rusted out, and cut the line. Toyota says the fix is no longer covered under the Class Action Lawsuit (Ended last year). They will however replace the frame for an estimate of $16,000. They say it isn't safe to drive without the fix. Is my Tundra totaled? Any recommendations on what I should do?

If you can’t find a donor frame for a decent price I think your best bet would be to part it out . Sorry

Thanks for the guidance! Unfortunately I’m not mechanical, I’m a fisherman. It looks like I’ll need to sell it to someone who can part it out. Any idea of a fair value?

I would gobble with Toyota a little first. Get the contact info from your dealer. Tell Toyota about your low mileage Tundra and how much you love it. You never know what might happen.

Get ahold of Toyota corporate and if you ask and try to keep a kind tone with them, they may be willing to cover the frame. We’ve done 1 out of the recall window because Toyota approved the repair.

Reading this actually angers me because I just paid my 08 tundra off and yes they did the "recall" but its not a garrentee. That's exactly what my dealer told me. O my truck just rolled 90k miles. I would Definitely haggle with corporate about this. Even if you have to pay for the labor at least its worth it them but 16k they are crazy.

Have any pics of the rusted crossbeam? How does the rest of the frame look? This is the main thing I fear about dumping more money into a Midwest Tundra.

I called Toyota Corporate on Tuesday. I was very reasonable and patient, but firm in my expectations. I currently have 4 Toyota’s. I spoke with first line service support, then I spoke with his Supervisor, (Danny Castro, Operations Supervisor, Customer Service Center, Plano, TX) Absolutely no mercy. No help. They want loyalty from their customers, but I feel like I’ve been hung out to dry. This was going to be my 15 yr old sons truck to drive.

Oogabooga, I hear you. It’s tough to know How much to continue putting in your truck, when you don’t Know if it could be totaled with a rusted cross brace. I don’t have pictures, but I’ll try and get some.

Just got approved to do a frame replacement on a 2008 w/ 78K today. Found it at a used car dealership which has had it sitting on the lot since Nov of last year. Looks like the used dealer did a paint/undercoat job on the frame, probably to try and move it. Talked the used dealer into taking it over to a Toyota dealer for inspection before I would buy it. Toyota corp approved the swap, two months for the frame to be delivered. From the homework I've done, it seems like you really need to find a dealer that will be a good voice for you. Try a couple different dealers in your area. From what I understand the frame is covered for 12 years from the manufacturing date - this truck was good until 01/2021. Best of luck!

That's what I was thinking. Get some metal, and start welding! At least it will give you some peace of mind that there's reinforcement in the compromised area.
    Also
@Chopper1 have you always owned the truck or did you recently buy it?

Glad you got approved! I think it's covered 12 years from Date Of First Use. Do you know where your perforation that qualified you was?

Damn. Thanks for the pics. How is the rest of the frame? Just as bad without perforations?

That truck is probably done. I would suggest, given your location, that you should apply something to your undercarriage every year before the salt sets in. People seem to like Wool Wax, others do a grease rub. I use fluid film. Whatever your next truck is, I would highly recommend you do this before each winter. No vehicle is made to sustain 6 months of continuous salt exposure.

Fast for to 2:15 for some interesting points.

Thanks for your responses. The rest of the frame is in surprisingly good shape...just some surface rust. The last picture is where the crossmember is connecting to the frame. It looks like it is bolted to the frame, not welded. I’m shocked that the crossmember can’t just be replaced.

New to the site, but your description fits my situation perfectly...how'd your repair turn out? I'm about to pull the bed off and repair the rust in my 07. The crossmembers are complete crap and I'm considering a custom steel fabrication, before spending $800 on 3 OEM crossmembers. From what I can tell these are riveted in and will take some work to remove. My plan is to bolt new ones in place. I'm curious at to what you've done and if you're happy with what you did? Any suggestions would be great.

    Thx!

    Hey Dan!

I’m sorry you are having the same issues with your frame. Toyota should be fixing these...

I am not mechanically inclined or skilled, so I needed to find someone to help. I couldn’t find anyone to replace the crossmember due to liability, so I sold the truck with full disclosure of the rusted crossmember. I included the same images posted here. I got $7,000 for it on Craigslist. The buyer turned around and re-listed it a few days later for $18K, with no disclosures. Buyer Beware!

This was just more bad news for me in 2020!

I did end up buying a new 2020 Tundra to replace it.

I'd never buy another Toyota if corp screwed me over like they did you. I have rust in my bed and you can bet this will be my last Toyota ever.
You need to post a link of the CL ad to give a heads up to any buyers. Also make sure you have sent in all your report of sale documentation to your state licensing department. You don't want the next owner coming back at you for any reason.
