I will be going to Denver in April to go see the Supercross. My girlfriend would like to go to Estes. My dilemma is whether to stay in Denver and make a day trip to Estes or stay a night in Denver and the other 2 nights in Estes. What are your thoughts on this and what do you recommend seeing/doing in both Denver and Estes

April is the second snowiest month here fwiw. Getting from
Denver to and from Estes with snow on the ground can be stressful/time consuming. Estes is basically a main street full of gift shops and restaurants. Can see it in about an hour. The Stanley is neat. Lots of cabin type lodging and you could book some fly fishing with Kirks fly shop if that’s your thing. A drive through the RMNP that time of year can take a day if you get out and do some walking. The best roads will be closed still. Denver is....well......busy. The Supercross will be one of a handful of times I dare to go down there in the next year and I live 15 minutes NW of the city. If food beer and crowds are your thing you’ll love Denver. Plenty of pot shops to help make you a food/beer lover! Watch out for the scooters. What are your interests? Would help with recommendations.

Agreed with Jbehredt that April can be snowy af, but you might also luck out and get 65F with sun. If the supercross is your priority stay nearby, but definitely make a trip to Estes/RMNP to get out of the city.

Light hiking, bicycling, and sightseeing would probably be the main interests. Of course some good food would go along with that. Pot shops are out, unfortunately, since we have random drug tests at work.

Denver is your typical huge city. Estes is your typical tourist af area. I wouldn't stay in either. If I had to pick I'd stay in Estes, you get to be in the mountains plus you don't have to be in a shithole. Win win.

In that case I’d fly into Denver. Stay the night there, hit the supercross then head to Estes for the next 2 days. The Hyatt puts you in the heart of the city. A short walk or electric rental scooter ride from the best dining and drinking options. The hiking in RMNP will be weather/snowpack dependent but it’s easy to get a mile or two from the parking lots on main trails. Bring a camera and take your time. Good chances of seeing moose, elk and bighorn sheep on any given day. Bears aren’t uncommon but less likely. My wife loves it up there but I don’t like hiking and looking at animals unless I’m carrying a bow or rifle (frowned upon in RMNP) ;)

A nice way to get to Estes from Denver is to go to Boulder, then up to Nederland. Then follow Hwy 72 and 7 North to Estes. The route is called the Peak to Peak Hwy.

Denver had weed. Estes has none. Denver has Traffic at rush hour, Estes is small enough to be congested regularly. You could split the distance some, and get an Airbnb in Boulder. This way you can visit Denver, and still not be super far from Estes Park.

Winter use to be my favorite time to visit Estes Park. Lots of stuff closed down and it was fairly quiet. Also lived about 10 minutes away for a bit.

Best to check the forecast for snowfall before traveling that way.

The park can be a treat..

I don't need to ask you how that went, as I had tickets too. Would have been my first Supercross event and I'm a Tomac fan. :frusty:

Definitely sucks. I try to go to 1 race a year and have been wanting to go back to CO for some time now. Was going to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Maybe next year.

Resurrecting this old thread. Obviously, due to covid, all of our original plans got canceled. So we are going to try this again. We are going to stay in Boulder this time and just drive in to Denver for the supercross and make a day trip to Estes. Any recommendations on places to stay in Boulder around $200 a night?

We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Boulder around this time last year. It was about $110 a night for us. Easy access to Estes and RMNP.

We stayed in Firestone. Easy access to interstate. Estes was not too far.
